The Zoo opened in 1904 and has grown to house approximately 320 species (2 000 animals) in 81 hectares. Just five of the animals housed at the zoo are world-record holders: largest rodent (Capybara), the tallest mammal (giraffe), the smallest canid (Fennec Fox), the largest predatory bird (Andean Condor) and the fastest land mammal (Cheetah).The zoo is extremely popular as a tourist destination and has gained international respect particularly for maintaining a high standard of animal welfare, nutrition and ethical conduct. The zoo also plays an important part in the conservation of both indigenous and endangered animals.There are several modern animal exhibits and educational centres, with a new exhibit housing “all things creepy crawly” opening in 2013. Day / night tours are available as well as overnight campouts, school holiday programmes, venue hire family fun days, and various other events.Visitors to the zoo get to see tigers, elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, sable antelope, bat-eared foxes, polar bears, wild dogs, vultures and crocodiles, among others. The zoo offers “smell, hear, touch and feel” programmes throughout the year, as well as feeding-time visits and talks on the weekends.The zoo plays an educational role, teaching visitors about the environment and conserving trees and other plants. It also serves a research function, and provides recreational activities to visitors in a safe, green and healthy environment.The zoo’s 54ha features numerous trees, water features and lovely walkways.
