A Night to Remember

2 March 2025 by Alan

Advertorial:
A Night to Remember:

The Sandton Convention Centre was alive with energy as GWM South Africa hosted its highly anticipated Dealer Conference and Awards, an annual event that not only celebrated the company’s top-performing dealerships but also heralded the arrival of three groundbreaking new vehicles.

More than 300 dealers, partners, and stakeholders gathered to witness the latest chapter in GWM’s remarkable 18-year journey in South Africa. What started as a modest brand offering durable pick-ups has transformed into a strong force in the local automotive market, boasting a diverse lineup that spans luxury SUVs, robust bakkies, and cutting-edge new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Three Bold New Arrivals: GWM Expands Its Local Lineup

At the heart of the conference was the unveiling of three highly anticipated models, each set to redefine expectations in its respective category.

The all-New GWM P300 – More Power. More Grit. More Adventure.

Fresh off the success of the award-winning P500, GWM introduced the all-new P300, a bakkie engineered for versatility, power, and refinement. Designed to tackle the toughest terrains and heaviest loads, the P300 features a formidable new generation 2.4L Turbo Diesel engine delivering 135kW and 480Nm of torque. Coupled with an advanced 9-speed automatic transmission, it promises seamless power delivery, optimal fuel efficiency, and an impressive towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes.

The P300 isn’t just about brute strength—it’s about intelligent design. Advanced driver assistance systems, cutting-edge infotainment, and premium interior finishes ensure that this is a workhorse that doesn’t compromise on comfort.

Tank 300 Diesel – Efficiency for Endless Adventures

GWM’s rugged Tank lineup received a powerful new addition in the form of the Tank 300 Diesel. Designed to cater to South Africa’s strong preference for diesel-powered 4x4s, this off-road beast comes equipped with the same 2.4L Turbo Diesel engine as the P300, ensuring enhanced low-end torque for superior off-road performance.

With a braked towing capacity of 3 000 kg, improved fuel efficiency, and a suite of off-road driving modes, the Tank 300 Diesel is set to become a favourite among adventure enthusiasts and overlanders alike.

Haval H6 GT PHEV – GWM’s first-ever PHEV in SA

GWM has unveiled its first plug-in hybrid for South Africa, the Haval H6 GT PHEV. With a class-leading electric range of up to 180 km on a single charge and impressive long-range performance, this model is a game-changer for eco-conscious drivers. Perfect for those embracing new energy vehicles but hesitant to fully commit to electric cars due to the current EV infrastructure, the H6 GT PHEV offers a seamless blend of sustainability and practicality.

Equipped with a cutting-edge hybrid powertrain producing 342kW and 762Nm of torque, the H6 GT PHEV accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Its advanced fast-charging capabilities allow it to recharge from 30% to 80% in just 26 minutes, reinforcing GWM’s commitment to innovation in the NEV space.

GWM’s investment in future mobility extends far beyond hybrids. The company has already committed over R32 billion to R&D globally in emerging technologies, including hydrogen propulsion, solidifying its position as a pioneer in the automotive industry.

Recognising the Backbone of GWM: The Dealer Network

While the unveiling of new models stole the spotlight, the evening was also about celebrating the dealers who have played a crucial role in GWM’s success. Across Southern Africa, GWM’s dealer network has expanded exponentially, bringing world-class service and products to customers in every corner of the region.

Top-performing dealerships were recognised for their outstanding contributions in categories such as sales, service, after-sales, vehicle accessories, and financing. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the four winners of the prestigious Dealer of the Year awards in the Small, Medium, Large, and Mega categories.

These awards underscore GWM’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its dealer network, ensuring that customers receive the best possible service and support wherever they are.

The top-performing winning dealers included:

  • Small Dealer of the Year –– GWM Bela-Bela
  • Large Dealer of the Year –– GWM Bruma
  • Mega Dealer of the Year –– GWM Menlyn
  • Overall Dealer of the Year –– GWM Bruma

A New Chapter in GWM’s South African Story

The GWM Dealer Conference also highlighted the brand’s remarkable growth in South Africa. From its humble beginnings as a niche pick-up supplier to its current standing as a top 10 vehicle brand, GWM has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation. The recent launch of the HAVAL H7 is a testament to this growth, offering a model that blends luxury with off-road capability. With the addition of the P300, Tank 300 Diesel, and H6 GT PHEV, GWM’s portfolio is now more diverse and compelling than ever before.

A Night to Remember

As the evening drew to a close, one lucky customer had even more reason to celebrate. The highly anticipated winner of the Win-a-Jolion Pro competition was finally announced, marking the end of a thrilling night with a life-changing moment.

Looking ahead, GWM remains steadfast in its commitment to the South African market. With a newly introduced comprehensive and transferable 7-year / 200 000 km warranty across the entire range, the brand is poised for even greater success.

As the automotive landscape evolves, GWM continues to lead from the front, delivering cutting-edge vehicles, expanding its dealer network, and staying true to its mission of providing world-class mobility solutions to South African drivers.

The Randlord Mansions: History

The history of these mansions is also a story of urban warfare and preservation. In the 1960s and 70s, as Johannesburg expanded, many of the original Parktown estates were ruthlessly demolished to make way for the M1 Highway and the massive concrete campus of the Wits University Medical School. The “Parktown War” saw heritage activists fighting the bulldozers to save what remained of the city’s architectural soul. Today, several of the surviving mansions serve as corporate headquarters, schools, or museums, stripped of their private domesticity but preserved as monuments to a gilded age.

Interestingly, these mansions also played a secret role in the city’s political evolution. It was in the drawing rooms of Parktown that the “progressive” mining elite would meet to discuss the future of the country, often finding themselves at odds with the more conservative Boer government. Lady Florence Phillips, in particular, used her influence to found the Johannesburg Art Gallery, insisting that a world-class city needed world-class culture, not just gold bars. Today, walking the “Heritage Trail” through Parktown offers a haunting contrast; you stand in the quiet, manicured gardens of the victors, looking down at the pulsing, crowded city that their gold mines created. It is the ultimate “view from the top,” a reminder that the extreme wealth of Sandton today has its DNA rooted in the stone-and-timber palaces of the 1900s.
