Adapting to a crisis and tackling the four walls of the data centre | MyPR.co.za

30 September 2020 by Alan

MyPR: Adapting to a crisis and tackling the four walls of the data centre:

Aki Anastasiou, Media personality and IT speaker

Veeam® Software, the leader in Backup solutions that deliver Cloud Data Management™, is proud to present the latest instalment of its free Digital Transformation Masterclass, which will feature media personality and IT speaker Aki Anastasiou and Michael Cade, Senior Global Technologist at Veeam. The webinar masterclass will take place on Wednesday, 30 September at 14:00 SAST and will focus on identifying the challenges of working from home, the importance of cloud adoption and effective data and security management.

Anastasiou’s presentation titled Adapting to a crisis: How the impossible became possible will cover the following:
The challenges of working from home.
Cloud adoption on steroids.
Security – the Achilles heel during the global pandemic?

In addition, in his presentation, Cade will address the four walls of the data centre, cyber-security and public cloud.

The global pandemic forced organisations, many of whom were not ready, to adopt a remote working culture. While most were able to set this up fairly quickly in response to the lockdown, it opened up a host of new challenges. With employees continuing to work from home, an organisation is incredibly vulnerable from a security and data protection perspective if it does not have a strategy for this, or a recovery plan in place.

It was the cloud, and Software as a Service (SaaS) collaboration tools, that enabled this shift to remote working culture. However, in the 21st Century, how this data is managed in the cloud is crucial to an organisation’s survival.

Unless there is a smart Cloud Data Management strategy in place, organisations can find themselves unable to gain traction in their digital transformation journeys.

Tailored specifically for C-suite executives and other senior IT professionals, the Veeam Digital Transformation Masterclass Series focuses on digital transformation and its impact on business – a conversation which has become increasingly apparent given the current state of remote business practises during and post lockdown.

Did you know this about Johannesburg? Johannesburg has a massive infrastructure: The city has more than 8000 km of water pipes and more than 8000 km of sewage pipes. It has more than 180,000 streetlights and more than 100 water towers and reservoirs. The city also has more than 1700 traffic lights. There are more than 120 community health clinics, 10 environmental health clinics, 35 cemeteries (which cover over 600 hectares) and 59 public swimming pools. The city has 106 dams, 394 public sport facilities and 98 public recreation centers. Despite the fact that there’s a huge amount of infrastructure, Johannesburg still has more 1000 hectares of green space in an around it.

Hulking, Resilient Giant

As of 2026, the Carlton Centre remains caught in a tug-of-war between its past glory and its future potential. There are ongoing discussions about converting portions of the massive office tower into affordable residential housing—a move that would reflect the broader “residentialization” of the inner city. It stands today not just as a skyscraper, but as a barometer for Johannesburg itself: a hulking, resilient giant that has survived economic crashes, political revolutions, and urban neglect, yet still offers the best view of where the city is going.
