Alert Community and Private Security Enable Arrests

16 October 2024 by Alan

Advertorial:
Alert Community and Private Security Enable Arrests:

GAUTENG – On Monday, 14 October 2024, Benoni Flying Squad members arrested two suspects and recovered two motor vehicles.

At around 12:00, Sergeant Jaco Powell and Warrant Officer Jabulani Khumalo received a lookout via a Community Poling group in Edenvale for a white Ford Bantam that had been hijacked. As they were proceeding to the area, it was reported that the vehicle with one suspect was cornered by security and CPF members on Linksfield Road, after being involved in an accident. Upon arrival the 45-year-old suspect was immediately arrested and detained at Edenvale SAPS.

The same members were contacted at around 18:00 by a Benoni security company to assist on Great North Road, opposite Engen with a motorcycle that was flagged as wanted. Upon their arrival, investigation revealed that the motorcycle was displaying a false registration number and license disc. The 26-year-old driver was immediately arrested.

In further policing an abandoned hijacked white Hyundai H100 was recovered at Giraffe Street, Villalisa, Boksburg reported on a Germiston case.

Once again the value of close relationships between the SAPS, private security companies through the Eyes and Ears Initiative and the community were proven and resulted in success against crime. Investigation continues in all cases.

The suspects will be appearing in the Edenvale and Benoni Magistrates’ Courts facing charges of possession of hijacked motor vehicle and fraud.

The Wilds: A Sanctuary of Stone and Steel

The Wilds was officially opened to the public in 1938, carved out of the rocky “koppies” (hills) of the Witwatersrand. Unlike the manicured lawns of the city’s more traditional parks, The Wilds was designed to showcase South Africa’s botanical heritage. It is a vertical garden of sorts, featuring steep stone paths that wind through forests of yellowwood trees, proteas, and ancient cycads. At its highest point, the reserve offers one of the most spectacular views of the Johannesburg skyline, where the brutalist towers of Hillbrow seem to rise directly out of the prehistoric-looking vegetation.

However, like many of Johannesburg’s public spaces, The Wilds fell into a period of deep neglect during the late 1990s and early 2000s. As crime rates rose and the city’s maintenance budgets shifted, the reserve became overgrown and was perceived as a “no-go zone.” The waterfalls stopped running, the stone paths crumbled, and the once-vibrant greenhouse became a skeletal ruin. For nearly two decades, this incredible piece of real estate sat largely abandoned, used only by a few brave locals and the occasional film crew looking for a “wilderness” setting within city limits.
