25 October 2024 by Alan

Advertorial:
Biggest Achiever of the Year in Passenger New Vehicle Sales:

The Citroën C3 is the Biggest Achiever of the Year in passenger new vehicle sales. The successful car was recognised at the naamsa Accelerator Awards along with three finalist nominations for brand-owner Stellantis.

The prestigious accolades are a celebration of the South African motor industry’s remarkable achievements and contributions and is the culmination of SA Auto Week.

The recently launched Citroën C3 has enjoyed a fantastic market reception with one of the country’s fastest sales growth rates. The C3 offers a unique blend of modern SUV styling and iconic Citroën design philosophy. With an elevated driving position and an impressive 180mm ground clearance, the C3 features superior visibility and driving confidence. All in the comfort of a cabin equipped with all the necessary technology for the upwardly mobile South African, including a class-leading 10″ HD Touchscreen and mirror-screen technology with Wireless Apple CarPlay & Wireless Android Auto.

The C3 achieves only 5.6 litres per 100km, providing extended affordability within cost of ownership, as does Citroën’s comprehensive 5-year / 100,000 km warranty. The C3 offers comfort and versatility packing a host of technology in typical Citroën comfort in a compelling value proposition.

Stellantis has been making major inroads into the South African automotive market as one of its largest importers. This contribution to the industry was also recognised by naamsa with nominations as finalists in three categories recognising job creation, youth empowerment, and empowering women.

Stellantis’ significant investment in its new manufacturing facility has not only committed the automaker to South Africa as a market destination but has also reinforced the company’s growth aspirations in Africa.

“We have an incredible range of vehicles that fits all needs, whether you’re a student, micro-entrepreneur, or a CEO,” says Stellantis SA managing director Mike Whitfield. “Stellantis remains one of the largest importers of vehicles in the country, with exceptional brands that cater for any mobility need and these Accelerator Awards are welcome recognition of the contribution we are making to local industry.”

From Sophiatown to Triomf

By 1963, Sophiatown had been physically razed to the ground. In a final act of psychological warfare, the government built a white working-class suburb over the rubble and named it Triumph (Triomf). They wanted to erase the very memory of Sophiatown from the landscape. For decades, the name Sophiatown disappeared from maps, replaced by the neat, sterile streets of the victors.

The “resurrection” of Sophiatown began officially in 2006, when the City of Johannesburg formally restored the original name to the suburb. Today, the neighborhood is a quiet, leafy residential area, but the ghosts of the “Paris of the Transvaal” are everywhere. The Sophiatown Heritage Centre, housed in the former home of Dr. A.B. Xuma (a former ANC president), is one of the few original buildings that escaped the bulldozers. Walking through the streets today, you can still find small markers of the past: a lone Victorian pillar, a specific tree mentioned in a poem, or the rebuilt St. Joseph’s Church.

The legacy of Sophiatown is not just one of tragedy, but of an indestructible cultural spirit. The music, the slang (Tsotsitaal), and the “Drum” era aesthetic continue to influence South African fashion and film today. It serves as a reminder that while you can bulldoze a house and rename a street, you cannot kill the soul of a place that once danced to the sound of a thousand saxophones.
