Boxer Super Run Joburg 2026 Boasts a Scenic and Challenging 5km Route

19 October 2026 by Con Tributor

Runners can look forward to 5km running at its best with a distinctly Johannesburg feel when the Boxer Super Run Joburg takes place on Sunday, 15 November 2026.

Returning to the City of Gold in 2026, the Boxer Super Run Joburg, in partnership with Powerade and Rexona, will bring together competitive racing, community spirit and plenty of fun for runners of all fitness levels.

Starting at the corner of Orange Road and Illovo Road, the route heads north along Orange Road before continuing onto The Braids Road. Runners will then turn left into Louw Geldenhuys Road, right into Muirfield Road, left into Marico Road and right into Komati Street.

From Komati Street, the route turns right into Umgeni Road, followed by a right turn into Hill Road and a left into Mazoe Road. Runners then turn left back into Orange Road, before making the final right turn into the venue and across the finish line.

The scenic route winds through established, tree-lined neighbourhoods, combining fast sections with rolling terrain and a series of elevation changes that will challenge participants as they make their way towards the finish.

According to Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports, the route has been designed to offer participants a different type of 5km challenge.

“Johannesburg’s undulating terrain gives the Boxer Super Run Joburg its own character,” says Meyer. “There are some great sections where runners can settle into their rhythm, but the hills will also test them along the way. It’s a route that will challenge participants while allowing them to enjoy the atmosphere and character of some of Johannesburg’s beautiful residential areas.”

Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Marketing at Boxer Superstores, says the Johannesburg event is an exciting opportunity to connect with the city’s diverse running community and create another memorable Boxer Super Run experience.

“Johannesburg has such a great running community, and there’s always a fantastic energy when runners come together. The Boxer Super Run is all about making 5km accessible, exciting and enjoyable for everyone, and we’re looking forward to seeing runners of all abilities take on the Joburg route and celebrate together at the finish.”

The World’s Largest Man-Made Urban Forest

One of the most surprising facts about Johannesburg is its status as a “green” city. When the first settlers arrived, the Highveld was a barren, treeless grassland (savannah). To support the mining industry, millions of trees were imported and planted to provide timber for mine underground supports. Fast forward to the present day, and Johannesburg is widely considered the largest man-made urban forest in the world.

There are an estimated 10 million trees within the city limits. This includes 1.2 million trees on sidewalks and in parks, and over 4.8 million in private gardens. This forest is so dense that satellite images of the northern suburbs often resemble a tropical rainforest. The most iconic of these trees is the Jacaranda, which was imported from South America in the early 20th century. Every October and November, the city turns a vibrant shade of purple as thousands of Jacarandas bloom simultaneously. However, this “forest” also highlights the city’s historical inequality; during the Apartheid era, trees were predominantly planted in wealthy white suburbs, leaving townships like Soweto as dusty plains. In the last two decades, “Greening Soweto” initiatives have seen hundreds of thousands of trees planted to bridge this “green divide,” emphasizing the role of urban forestry in social justice and climate cooling.
