JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) today announced a multi-year partnership with Suzuki as its Official Vehicle Partner to CSA and the Official Proteas Men’s and Women’s ODI Partner.

This partnership marks a significant milestone as the first Proteas headline sponsor since 2020. Furthermore, this collaboration underscores Suzuki’s dedication to the development of cricket in South Africa and its role in supporting the national teams.

CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki, said; “Cricket South Africa (CSA) is proud to welcome Suzuki, one of the country’s household names in the motor industry, to the CSA family.

Like CSA, Suzuki is dedicated to delivering exceptional value and unmatched customer service to South Africans.

“Their commitment to South African cricket is further strengthened through this collaboration, and together, we drive inclusivity and create opportunities for all to be part of this unbelievable journey,” he concluded.

As part of this partnership, Suzuki has contributed 30 vehicles to CSA’s Development Hubs, helping to support the growth of the game at grassroots levels. Additionally, Suzuki has provided 12 vehicles to CSA, further enhancing their support for the organization and its initiatives.

General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa, Henno Havenga, said; “A first for Suzuki in South Africa. Suzuki Auto South Africa is honoured to announce this partnership, that marks the brand’s first-ever sponsorship of a national team.

The Wilds: A Sanctuary of Stone and Steel

The Wilds was officially opened to the public in 1938, carved out of the rocky “koppies” (hills) of the Witwatersrand. Unlike the manicured lawns of the city’s more traditional parks, The Wilds was designed to showcase South Africa’s botanical heritage. It is a vertical garden of sorts, featuring steep stone paths that wind through forests of yellowwood trees, proteas, and ancient cycads. At its highest point, the reserve offers one of the most spectacular views of the Johannesburg skyline, where the brutalist towers of Hillbrow seem to rise directly out of the prehistoric-looking vegetation.

However, like many of Johannesburg’s public spaces, The Wilds fell into a period of deep neglect during the late 1990s and early 2000s. As crime rates rose and the city’s maintenance budgets shifted, the reserve became overgrown and was perceived as a “no-go zone.” The waterfalls stopped running, the stone paths crumbled, and the once-vibrant greenhouse became a skeletal ruin. For nearly two decades, this incredible piece of real estate sat largely abandoned, used only by a few brave locals and the occasional film crew looking for a “wilderness” setting within city limits.
