Don’t Throw Away Joburg’s Last Chance

18 October 2026 by Con Tributor

Statement by Helen Zille – DA Johannesburg mayoral candidate:

Johannesburg cannot afford another five years of corruption, waste and collapsing services. This election is our last chance to turn the city around.

At today’s final rally, my message is clear: we can save Joburg, but the future is in your hands.

The DA could win the most votes and still be kept out by another coalition of the same parties that broke this city. We need a mandate strong enough to govern, take difficult decisions and finish the job.

Our record in government shows what can be achieved. More jobs, quality basic services and zero tolerance for corruption.

We will fix the finances, cut waste and ring-fence water and electricity revenue to rebuild those services. We will replace pipes, repair substations and maintain roads.

We will appoint honest, capable officials; fight corruption; and open every government contract to public scrutiny.

We will restore law and order, fix the billing system and cut delays that stop businesses investing and creating jobs.

The polls show that the impossible has become possible.

A DA majority is within reach.

But you cannot demand change and leave it to somebody else to vote for it.

Failure is a choice.

If you stay home, you surrender Joburg’s future to others. If you vote for a small party, you vote for another chaotic and corrupt coalition.

Don’t spend the next five years regretting the generationalchance you threw away.

On 4 November, vote DA on both ballots. Our future depends on it.

And your vote can win it.

Carlton Centre: Top of Africa

The 50th floor is home to the “Top of Africa” observation deck, which remains the most famous viewpoint in the city. From this height, the “man-made forest” of the northern suburbs looks like a green carpet, while to the south, the massive yellow mine dumps remind you of the city’s origins. Despite the closure of the hotel and the shifting fortunes of the CBD, the Carlton Centre refuses to become a relic. It is currently the headquarters of the state-owned transport giant Transnet, and its lower retail levels are among the most densely traded spaces in the country, serving thousands of commuters daily.
