After nearly two years of covid where many community betterment campaigns had to be put on hold, the Foundation for a Drug Free World proudly relaunched its campaign by giving a first drug education workshop to the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) in Johannesburg, where the drug situation badly hurts and even more so since covid.

Also in attendance were various community members and NGOs who want to address the ever growing substance abuse addictions in their communities that has destroyed countless lives.

“We are very happy to be able to offer these classes to the public again. Watching the drug abuse and violence unfolding even more during the pandemic has been very devastating for us,” said Xochitl Kgosana, Program Director for Drug Free World-Africa.

The training workshop began with a preview of the “Truth about Drugs documentary”, fully immersing the attention of the audience. “The best way to convey the truth about drugs is through the words of those who have “been there and know firsthand the trauma that comes with it.” By telling their stories, they can pass on what they have learned so others avoid going down the same path” said Ms. Kgosana as she described the award winning documentary.

The attendees then proceeded into enrolling onto the “Truth about Drugs online course” to equip themselves with practical knowledge about every drug that is available on the market and the side effects.

“It is impossible for every individual to know everything about drugs. This is why we are so happy to contribute by providing material needed in this subject,” added Ms. Kgosana.

One of the members of a local NGO in attendance was overheard saying that this information is fascinating and interesting and that he will share it with other NGO members and his community.

After going through the first main steps of the training, the attendees began to read sections of the Truth about Drugs booklet aloud, giving their own examples of drug addiction.

“I enjoyed the training seminar. I feel that I am well equipped now. I know that doing substance abuse awareness campaigns in schools, as well as in our community is the best way of preventing drug abuse. I am ready to start,” said Simphiwe Khumalo – Social Worker from the SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL COUNCIL ON ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG DEPENDENCE (SANCA).

Phil Modise, a Director from Heaven On Earth Organization, said, “This Truth About Drugs training seminar was exceptionally informative and educational. I believe that education and Awareness is the most important aspect in preventing drug abuse. It is hard to see women, children and men living without purpose and depending on drugs and now I am more excited to bring awareness to my community”.

At the end of the seminar all the attendees were fired up to be agents of change in their communities and play their part in ending drug abuse.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.

“No one, especially a young person, likes to be lectured about what he or she can or cannot do. Thus, we provide the facts that empower youth to make a well informed choice in the first place. We are definitely looking forward to doing more of these training sessions, concluded Ms. Kgosana.

Did you know this about Johannesburg? Sophiatown was originally part of the farm Waterval. In 1897 the speculator Hermann Tobiansky acquired a 237-acre portion of the farm, which was situated about four miles or so west of the centre of Johannesburg. In 1903 he had some of the land surveyed as leasehold township, divided into almost 1700 small stands. The township was named after Tobiansky’s wife, Sophia, and some of the streets were named after his children Toby, Gerty, Bertha and Victoria. Blacks started acquiring land in Sophiatown.

The Randlord Mansions: Palaces of the Mining Elite

The move to Parktown began in the 1890s, led by the likes of Sir Lionel Phillips and his wife, Lady Florence Phillips. They sought a location that was close enough to the gold mines for business but high enough to catch the clean breezes of the Highveld. The result was a neighborhood of architectural opulence that had no equal in the Southern Hemisphere. These were not mere houses; they were sprawling estates designed by the most famous architects of the British Empire, including Sir Herbert Baker, who brought a “Cape Dutch-meets-Arts-and-Crafts” aesthetic to the rocky ridges of Johannesburg.
