Harvest Place has opened in Kempton Park in the Ekurhuleni Metro, Gauteng, introducing 17,250sqm of sought-after community retail convenience with an impressive profile of retailers to the landmark Riverfields Mixed-use Precinct.

Harvest Place is an upscale community centre aimed at family-focused convenience to meet the lifestyle and leisure needs of its local community beyond. It offers 70 stores anchored by Checkers, Food Lovers Market, Woolworths Food, and Westpack, with a wide range of choices from all popular categories along with unique restaurants which add charm to the shopping experience.

The Joint Venture development between Riverfields and Stonesman/Gonrinha opened on Thursday, 26 July 2022, to an enthusiastic turnout. Its first-ever shoppers were welcomed with a grand opening celebration including entertainment, gifts and take-home photobooth prints.

Daniel Wilken of Stonesman says, “We are delighted that such an impressive profile of retailers has opened at Harvest Place, providing extremely comprehensive one-stop daily shopping for its community. The convenience of accessing a variety of retailers under one roof is just the start, Harvest Place also offers local residents and visitors upmarket lifestyle experiences in a modern and fresh environment.”

The centre opened fully let, featuring a compelling mix of popular brands and unique independent retail concepts. Among some of the better-known brands contributing to Harvest Place’s shopper appeal are Mr Price and Mr Price Home, Old Khaki, Pick n Pay Clothing, Milady’s, The Sneaker Shack, PNA, The Crazy Store, Clicks, Wellness Warehouse, Spec Savers, and Matrix Warehouse.

Harvest Place also offers great tastes from the menus of Café Estreito, Doppio Zero, Kauai, Ribs and Burgers, Simply Asia, Smack Pizza, and The Pie Crew, as well as snacks and treats from Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream, Mantelli’s Direct, Tasko Sweets and Biltong & Nut Hut. Restaurants you can look forward to opening, are Tiger’s Milk opening in September, and The Hussar Grill and Cappuccinos opening in October. Joining us in November will be Wi-Jump.

The centre is designed by Johan Marais Architecture and spans three levels, including a parking basement, ground and first floor. It offers over 1,000 parking bays, 233 covered and 780 open, all of which provide free parking for customers.

Harvest place is located in the heart of the rapidly expanding Riverfields Precinct, which has seen huge residential, logistics and business growth. It is situated at the high-profile corner of Monument Road and Blaauwklippen Avenue, Glen Erasmia, with great access from the Kempton Park residential areas to the R21 highway and ideally positioned for residents of Glen Marais, Kempton Park Agricultural Holdings, Allen Grove, Witfontein, Serengeti Golf Estate and surrounds.

Riverfields is a mixed-use development within a sound urban development framework designed to make its area a hub for sustainable growth. The precinct is well planned and engineered for tomorrow, preserving the natural wetland areas and integrating pedestrian and public transport to give substance to the term sustainable living. It also includes social, educational and recreational facilities, with Harvest Place being Riverfields’ flagship neighbourhood shopping centre.

The precinct includes A-grade offices at the gateway to OR Tambo International Airport with good access to the R21 freeway. Riverfields has become a preferred address for new residential developments, as well as for investors in a growing logistics and warehousing business node, situated in a landscaped environment with 24-hour monitored security.

Have you tried: Visiting Port Elizabeth?

Did you know this about Johannesburg? Johannesburg is the world’s biggest man-made forest, with over 10 million trees. This number is set to grow, as City Parks launched the Greening Soweto project in 2006, with the goal of planting an extra 200 000 trees in the famous township. Not only do Joburg’s trees combat the greenhouse effect, they help reduce noise in this ‘urban jungle’.

The Oriental Plaza: Architecture

Architecturally, the Plaza is a sprawling 17-hectare complex consisting of North and South malls linked by a three-story circular “Grand Bazaar.” But the true magic is in the sensory experience. Walking through the Plaza is an assault of colors and smells: rolls of exotic sari fabrics stacked to the ceiling, the scent of high-quality leather from shoe-repair stalls, and the aroma of toasted spices. It is a place where “bargaining” is an art form—unlike the fixed prices of Sandton, here you engage directly with the owner, often a third-generation merchant whose family was moved from Fietas fifty years ago.

The cultural heart of the Plaza is undoubtedly its food, specifically the legendary World of Samoosas. This small stall has become a local institution, famous for its unique sweet coconut samoosas and its “Nelson Mandela approved” status (the former president was a fan). Near the south entrance, you’ll find a blue heritage plaque marking Red Square. Long before the Plaza was built, this was an open square where the ANC and Communist Party held mass rallies, and where the Defiance Campaign was launched in 1952. The fact that a shopping mall now stands over this revolutionary ground is a poignant reminder of the city’s layered history. The Oriental Plaza didn’t just survive Apartheid; it outlasted the system that tried to use it as a cage, becoming a symbol of the “tenacity and trading ability” that defines the Johannesburg spirit.
