Florida Road Closures

11 March 2026 by Con Tributor

The City of Johannesburg through the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is committed to providing safer, more reliable roads for all commuters and residents. Please note that we will be conducting essential road maintenance in Florida on Wednesday,11 March 2026 with some roads requiring temporary closure. The road maintenance scheduled for the 5th of March 2026 was postponed to the 11th of March 2026 due to adverse weather conditions.

Please plan your trip and take note of the following temporary closures:

CLOSURE: Goldman Street

  • Location: Goldman Street between Fourth Road and 1st Avenue.
  • Time: 06:00 to 15:00.
  • Reason: Road markings and repainting of parking bays to improve visibility. Kindly ensure all vehicles are removed from on-street parking bays along this section before 06:00. We want to avoid any risk to vehicles and note that any vehicles remaining in the work zone may be relocated to allow the maintenance to proceed safely.
  • Northbound Route: Use Madeline Street and Church Street.
  • Southbound Route: Use Lockies Street and Dan Street.

CLOSURE: Alexander Street & 9th Avenue Intersection

  • Location: The intersection of Alexander Street and 9th Avenue.
  • Time: 06:00 to 15:00.
  • Reason: Deep patching (structural repair of the road surface).
  • Access: The intersection will be fully closed. Affected properties immediately adjacent to the intersection will have managed access, but please expect some delays.

Alternative Routes: 7th Avenue, Madeline Street, Die Ou Pad Road, West Avenue or the Highway.

Kindly plan your trip to avoid the area and prevent unnecessary U-turns while obeying temporary road safety signage and Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) officers and remain patient to ensure the safety for all while these essential upgrades are completed.

Ponte City: The Vertical Microcosm

Designed by architect Rodney Grosskopff, Ponte City was envisioned as the ultimate in “jet-set” urban living. It was the first circular skyscraper in Africa, designed with a hollow “core” or “atrium” that allowed light into the apartments from both sides. When it opened, it was one of the most prestigious addresses in Johannesburg. The top three floors were massive, multi-level penthouses equipped with saunas, wine cellars, and shag carpeting, offering 360-degree views of the Highveld. The bottom levels featured high-end retail and even a bowling alley. It was a playground for the young, wealthy, and white during the height of the Apartheid era.
