Free Maths Software Available to all Teachers in South Africa

16 June 2021 by Alan

MyPR: Free Maths Software Available to all Teachers in South Africa:

Cape Town, June 16, 2021: To celebrate Youth Day and Youth Month, Head Start Education has partnered with SplashLearn, the leading game based learning program in the world, to provide free access to SplashLearn’s maths program to all teachers in South Africa. This digital educational offering is valued at over R5000 per teacher.

In 2017, the World Economic Forum ranked South Africa’s primary education 116th and its maths and science education as 128th out of 137 countries. There is a clear need for South African learners to receive as much attention and quality resources in mathematics as possible. Furthermore, the COVID-19 Pandemic has led to millions of learners needing to play catchup due to the interruptions of the school year in 2020.

SplashLearn aims to solve these problems by creating engaging and scalable learning experiences to transform children into fearless learners. Its Pre-kindergarten to Grade 5 game-based learning program has an adaptive algorithm that offers each child a personalized learning experience that is fun and immersive. The program gives teachers access to a teacher dashboard, which provides real-time updates on each student’s progress. If a student is struggling with a particular concept, the teacher dashboard allows them to see and address the issue to better help the student. SplashLearn also allows teachers access to its content library which covers 400+ curriculum-aligned math skills with over 6500 games and activities, to help students learn new math concepts through engaging game-based learning modules. It is currently used by more than 40 million children and 750 000 teachers in over 150 countries.

“We believe that the use of SplashLearn will eventually provide a world-class mathematics education to millions of South African students”, said Shivad Singh, the 26-year-old founder & CEO of Head Start Education.

“The key to effective education is making sure each student’s individual needs are met. Achieving this is proving difficult given the present situation. There has been tremendous learning loss due to the pandemic, especially among elementary school children”, said Arpit Jain, co-founder and CEO of SplashLearn. “We believe this endeavour with Head Start Education in South Africa will further our vision of building equity, access, and quality education for all”, Arpit added.

Youth day commemorates the role of the youth who fought against the Apartheid regime. Just like how the Soweto Uprising laid the grounds for the release of Nelson Mandela and the end of the Apartheid Era, the two companies hope that by giving free access to the leading maths software in the world to teachers, it will pave the way for an improvement in learners’ mathematics marks. This will ultimately lead to a rise in the standards of education and improvement in mathematical outcomes across South Africa.

Head Start Education will be working with Superiate Marketing to roll out the free SplashLearn licenses to as many primary schools as possible as part of Superiate’s upliftment program, starting in the third term. This campaign is one of the first steps in Head Start’s mission to improve education in South Africa. “Every child has the potential to be a genius”, says Shivad Singh, a News24 Young Mandela of the Future and Queen’s Young Leader. “We want to unlock that potential in as many learners as possible in South Africa and then the rest of Africa.”

Have you tried: Travelling to South Africa?

Did you know this about Johannesburg? The first recorded discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand was made by Jan Gerrit Bantjes in June 1884, on the farm Vogelstruisfontein. Other farms to become famous later included Langlaagte, Turffontein, Doornfontein and Braamfontein. George Harrison is today credited as the man who discovered an outcrop of the Main Reef of gold on the farm Langlaagte in February 1886. On 12 May 1886 Harrison and his partner, George Walker, entered into a prospecting agreement with the owner of Langlaagte, one G.C. Oosthuizen. Two days later Colonel Ignatius Ferreira staked out his camp on Turffontein to serve as a centre for diggers.

The Maboneng Precinct: Transformation

The transformation began in 2009 with a single building: Arts on Main. Developed by Propertuity, this converted 1905 construction-and-distribution center became the anchor for what would become a world-class creative hub. It successfully lured back the middle class and the international community by offering something the sterile northern suburbs lacked: authentic urban grit blended with high-end culture. Arts on Main became the studio home of world-renowned artist William Kentridge, whose presence lent the project immediate cultural gravity. Today, the precinct spans several city blocks and is a kaleidoscope of murals, rooftop bars, boutique hotels, and independent cinemas.
