Great Opening Day for Rip Curl Gromsearch Seal Point

22 September 2024 by Alan

Advertorial:
Great Opening Day for Rip Curl Gromsearch Seal Point:

Seal Point, Cape St Francis – The day started with thunder, lightning, and a downpour, but once that was all over, it turned out to be an amazing day of surfing at the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Sea Harvest.

Light onshore winds, some sunshine, and highly contestable waves reeled down the point for the competitors. Some top performers included Ben Esterhuyse (CPT), Leo MacLeod (CSF), Luc Lepront (Scottburgh), Levi Epenetos (Melkbos), Josh Malherbe (Coffee Bay), and Kai Stubbs (CPT).

This event has a lot on the line, with the SA Surf Tour final rankings, Rip Curl GromSearch final rankings, and the trip to Bali for the U16 winners of the GromSearch series all coming from this contest. The SA Surf Tour final rankings are based on the best six out of nine contests and are an element used in SA Squad selection.

Constitution Hill: Great African Steps

One of the most moving features of the site is the Great African Steps, a walkway that runs between the dark, stone walls of the Number Four prison and the transparent glass of the new court. It represents the “bridge” between the old South Africa and the new. At the top of these steps, tucked into one of the four remaining stairwells of the demolished Awaiting Trial Block, burns the Flame of Democracy. Lit by Nelson Mandela in 2011 to mark the 15th anniversary of the Constitution, this perpetual flame serves as a constant reminder that the light of freedom must never again be extinguished in Johannesburg.
