Homecoming

7 September 2026 by Con Tributor

Johannesburg: Hyundai Automotive South Africa is taking its stylish Hyundai EXTER beyond the traditional automotive space and into youth culture, at one of the Gauteng’s biggest youth lifestyle events.

Hyundai has been named the official vehicle partner of the sold-out Homecoming Sun City Takeover, taking place from 6 to 9 November 2026. The partnership will combine mobility with lifestyle experiences, giving Hyundai an opportunity to engage directly with Gauteng’s younger and economically-active audiences.

“We want to connect with young consumers in ways that are relevant to their lives,” said Tshiamo Tladi, Marketing Director at Hyundai Automotive South Africa. “The Hyundai EXTER is about making mobility accessible, practical and expressive and Homecoming gives us a platform to bring that spirit to life.”

As part of the partnership, Hyundai is inviting Gauteng fans to #GoTheExterMile, a competition that rewards those willing to go the extra mile. The competition goes live on 14 September 2026 and winners will receive double tickets to the highly sought-after, sold-out event, free accommodation, along with a preloaded Howler tag to cover festival costs.

The competition gets its name from the Hyundai EXTER and its positioning as a compact, urban-friendly crossover aimed at consumers looking for an accessible entry into the SUV lifestyle. This much-loved model was launched in South Africa in 2024 as Hyundai’s smallest and most affordable SUV.

“Partnering with Hyundai Automotive South Africa is a natural fit for us,” said Oratile Sangweni, Director of Events & Execution at Homecoming Events.

“They understand what young people care about and how to show up for them authentically, not just as a sponsor, but as part of the culture. Having them on board as our official mobility partner and bringing initiatives like #GoTheExterMile and the Hyundai Social Hub to life, adds real value to the Sun City Takeover experience.”

Hyundai Automotive South Africa will also introduce the Hyundai Social Hub, a dedicated on-site experience featuring activations, giveaways and opportunities for festival-goers to engage with the brand. Further details will be announced closer to the event.

The Rand Club: Redemption

The “redemption” of the Rand Club is a fascinating mirror of the city’s broader transformation. In 2016, a group of businessmen and heritage enthusiasts stepped in to save the club from permanent closure. They didn’t just renovate the physical structure; they fundamentally “decolonized” the institution’s culture. Today, the Rand Club is a vibrant, multi-racial hub of Johannesburg’s intellectual and business elite. It has opened its doors to the public for events, tours, and as a co-working space for young entrepreneurs.

One of the most striking changes is in the art. While the walls are still lined with portraits of historical figures, they are now interspersed with contemporary African art and photography that challenges the old narratives. The club has transitioned from a secretive “fortress” of the colonial elite into a shared space for the city’s new generation of leaders. It remains a place where history is physically present—you can still sit in the same leather chairs where Rhodes sat—but the conversations happening in those chairs are now about the future of a democratic, African-led Johannesburg. It is a testament to the fact that even the most rigid institutions in “Joburg” must adapt or vanish.
