JITI: What is Happening?

ActionSA Johannesburg will be heading to the Public Protector to lodge a complaint against the City of Johannesburg pertaining to the unjustified delay in handing over the Johannesburg International Transport Interchange (JITI) to its intended beneficiaries.

JITI was conceived as a central hub for long-distance and cross-border buses, minibus taxis, retail activities and commuter facilities, with the aim of improving transport integration, reducing congestion and supporting inner-city rejuvenation.

This world-class facility, which came at a cost of R400 million, was designed to include approximately 50,000 m² of floor space, retail facilities, banks, ticket offices, food courts, informal trading areas, ranking space for 648 taxis, and bays for 20 buses, together with CCTV and access control systems.

ActionSA has used all available council channels to address this matter has been ignored.

It is worth noting that Council is just one of the mechanisms we can use to address this. However, it is not the final arbiter. Hence, we are now approaching the Office of the Public Protector to intervene.

We would like to categorically state that we are not going to rest until this matter is resolved. We cannot continue to have completed facilities that remain idle while there is a great need to utilise them, simply because there is no political will from the GLU administration led by Mayor Dada Morero.

Instead of prioritising service delivery, this administration is embroiled in a power struggle to the detriment of more than 6 million residents of Johannesburg.

ActionSA will not be a bystander in matters that involve our residents. Moreover, it cannot be correct that a city that is struggling to generate revenue neglects facilities that could assist in improving revenue collection.

Constitution Hill: Precinct

The precinct is divided into several harrowing sections. The Old Fort was primarily reserved for white male prisoners, with the notable exception of Nelson Mandela, who was held in its hospital wing in 1962 because authorities deemed him too influential to be housed with the general black population. Nearby is Number Four, the “Native Gaol,” which is perhaps the most visceral part of the museum. Built in 1904, it was designed to break the spirit of black men. Visitors today can see the isolation cells (called emakhulukhuthu or “the deep dark hole”) and learn about the “Tausa” dance—a humiliating search ritual where naked prisoners were forced to jump and clap to prove they weren’t hiding contraband. The Women’s Jail, a Victorian-style brick building, tells the stories of women like Daisy de Melker (South Africa’s most famous murderess) alongside political icons who were often arrested for “crimes” as simple as brewing beer or not having their passbooks.
