Johannesburg Metro Discharges Millions of Litres of Untreated Sewage Into Rivers

4 June 2026 by Con Tributor

Three of the City of Johannesburg’s waste water treatment works, which are not functioning properly, are responsible for approximately 90 million litres of untreated sewage flowing into rivers every day, ultimately ending up in the Hartbeespoort Dam.

These alarming facts were revealed on Wednesday during a meeting of the Environmental Affairs Oversight Committee.

Because Johannesburg is situated on a watershed, untreated sewage is carried southwards via the Klip River, while the bulk flows northwards via the Jukskei River before entering the Hartbeespoort Dam. This explains the hyacinth problem in the Dam to a large extent.

In addition to severe maintenance backlogs, six waste water treatment plants in Johannesburg no longer have the capacity to process the growing volume of sewage.

The Managing Director of Johannesburg Water, Nishavheni Mukwevho, assured the Committee that the maintenance backlog would be urgently addressed.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) will keep exposing such serious and illegal pollution, while holding the relevant departments and officials accountable. It is unacceptable that Johannesburg’s sewage crisis is contaminating the environment and water resources in neighbouring municipalities while residents are paying a premium for basic services.

The Johannesburg Metro’s dire financial position is further hampering service delivery.

It is every resident’s duty to register and vote on 4 November 2026. The Freedom Front Plus is ready to play a key role in governing the Metro and oust the ANC government from power.

After years of poor governance, Johannesburg cannot afford another five years under ANC rule.

Carlton Centre: Top of Africa

The 50th floor is home to the “Top of Africa” observation deck, which remains the most famous viewpoint in the city. From this height, the “man-made forest” of the northern suburbs looks like a green carpet, while to the south, the massive yellow mine dumps remind you of the city’s origins. Despite the closure of the hotel and the shifting fortunes of the CBD, the Carlton Centre refuses to become a relic. It is currently the headquarters of the state-owned transport giant Transnet, and its lower retail levels are among the most densely traded spaces in the country, serving thousands of commuters daily.
