Kenei Set for SA Debut at Totalsports Women’s Race Joburg

10 August 2026 by Con Tributor

Boasting a 30:29 10km personal best, Kenya’s Brenda Kenei is excited to make her South African debut at the Totalsports Women’s Race Joburg on Sunday, 16 August 2026.

“I’m excited to compete in South Africa for the first time, especially in a women’s-only race where I can celebrate alongside thousands of sports-loving women while chasing the qualifying standard for the 2027 World Championships,” says Kenei. “Competing in Johannesburg will certainly be challenging, given the altitude and moderately hilly course, but I’m ready for the challenge.”

“My goal is to break the 30:30 barrier,” she adds confidently. “I know that many women will be pushing their own limits, and that same determination motivates us at the front of the race. I wish everyone safe and successful preparations, and encourage runners to support one another on race day. Find someone to run with and help each other achieve your goals.”

“We are excited to welcome Brenda Kenei to South Africa for her debut at the Totalsports Women’s Race in Joburg,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Her impressive credentials and ambitious goal of breaking the 30:30 barrier will add another exciting dimension to the final event of our Women’s Month celebration. We are proud that the Totalsports Women’s Race continues to attract top international athletes while creating an inspiring platform where elite runners and thousands of women of all ages and abilities can celebrate the power of running together.”

Welcoming Kenei to the elite field, Nikki Crous, Head of Marketing at Totalsports, says the Kenyan star’s debut will add to the excitement of the series finale.

“Brenda’s debut is another exciting milestone for the Totalsports Women’s Race. Her ambition and passion for the sport embody the spirit of this event, where women are encouraged to challenge themselves while celebrating one another. We look forward to welcoming Brenda, alongside thousands of participants, to what promises to be an unforgettable day of running, inspiration and empowerment in Johannesburg.”

The Maboneng Precinct: A “Place of Light” in the Urban Core

The word Maboneng means “Place of Light” in Sotho, and it is an apt name for a neighborhood that rose from the literal and figurative shadows of Johannesburg’s inner-city decay. Located on the eastern edge of the Central Business District (CBD) in a sub-district once known as City and Suburban, this area was historically a collection of light-industrial warehouses and gritty manufacturing plants. During the 1990s and early 2000s, as capital flight saw businesses flee the city center for the fortified suburbs of Sandton and Rosebank, these blocks became a “no-go zone” characterized by hijacked buildings, crime, and urban flight.
