Kyalami Residents Stop House Robbery, 1 Suspect Arrested

17 January 2022 by Alan

MyPR: Kyalami Residents Stop House Robbery, 1 Suspect Arrested:

This week, a housebreaking suspect in the Kyalami AH area was arrested and turned over to the police by community patrollers and local security companies while two other suspects were scared off.

Around 21:40 pm,  security guards from Castle Kyalami spotted 3 males in the community cameras hiding and slowly creeping in the long grass down the side of Main road as cars drove by. The three males then crossed the Main Rd and disappeared into the bushes.

The Control room at Castle Kyalami immediately started the community intrusion drill which includes sending Castle fidelity guards to the location of the suspects, calling the community watch, Midrand sector 4 patrollers, CPF members, the neighboring Fidelity TRSS, ADT guards, the Fidelity drone unit and the Police. A total of 25 people and 16 vehicles responded immediately upon notice.

All the above units split up and cornered off the area the suspects were last seen. One of the 3 males was caught on Zinnia and Rena road as the other two fled.

A drone was then deployed to find the remaining two males. The search was called off after an hour of searching without success in finding the other two suspects.

The first male who was caught led the CPF members to their house break- in tools which they were going to use in a planned house burglary. He was later questioned by Midrand SAPS and taken into custody.

Did you know this about Johannesburg? The city is very leafy: According to the City of Johannesburg website, there are 1.2 million trees within parks and on pavements and an estimated 4.8 million trees in private gardens. Many regard the city as the world’s biggest man-made forest, but this fact is disputed. Unofficial claims say that Johannesburg has 10 million trees. In 2013, New York City had 5.2 million trees and was planning to plant another million by 2017. New York City has a population of more than 8 million people.

The Wilds: Rebirth

The “rebirth” of The Wilds is one of the most heartening community success stories in modern Johannesburg history. It was spearheaded by local artist James Delaney and a dedicated group of volunteers starting around 2013. Delaney began by simply clearing dead wood and trimming overgrown paths on his own, but the project soon evolved into a massive public-private partnership. The most iconic addition to the park during this revival was the installation of over 100 laser-cut steel sculptures of animals. These brightly colored owls, giraffes, antelopes, and monkeys are perched in the trees and tucked behind rocks, turning a walk through the reserve into a scavenger hunt for “industrial wildlife.”

Today, The Wilds is a thriving, safe, and dog-friendly space that hosts yoga classes, art exhibitions, and thousands of visitors every weekend. It has become a symbol of “active citizenship”—the idea that the residents of Johannesburg don’t have to wait for the government to fix their city; they can take ownership of their own neighborhoods. The park is also a critical ecological corridor; in a city that is increasingly paved over, The Wilds provides a habitat for indigenous birdlife and insects that would otherwise struggle to survive in the “concrete jungle.”
