Lions, Titans, and Cobras Win Big

28 September 2026 by Con Tributor

Johannesburg: It was another action-packed day in the YesPlay Pro20 Cup as the YesPlay Western Province Cobras, Momentum Multiply Titans and DP World Lions all secured victories on Sunday.

At YesPlay Newlands, Daniel Smith struck a match-winning unbeaten 86 off 46 balls when Cobras edged Flexbrands Knights by five wickets in a thrilling finish.

Knights posted 168/7 after being sent in to bat, led by Jonathan Bird (41), Ruan Haasbroek (39) and an unbeaten 30 from Emmanuel Motswiri.

Josh Breed was the pick of the Cobras bowlers with 3/31.

In reply, Smith took control of the chase with five fours and five sixes, receiving valuable support from George Linde (23).

He held his nerve through the final over, smashing two sixes and the Cobras reached 169/5 in 19.4 overs, sealing victory with two balls to spare.

In White River, Sinethemba Qeshile produced a breathtaking display of power hitting to see Titans cruise to a nine-wicket victory over Mpumalanga Rhinos in a rain-reduced six-over encounter.

Rhinos posted 75/2, with Ruben Du Toit unbeaten on 35 and Garnett Tarr contributing 23.

Qeshile then took the game away from the hosts, blasting 56 off just 18 deliveries, including seven fours and four sixes.

Keagan Lion-Cachet added an unbeaten 14 off five balls and Titans raced to 79/1 in five overs.

Meanwhile in Durban, Lions held their nerve to secure an eight-run victory over Hollywoodbets Dolphins in a high-scoring encounter.

Lions posted an imposing 202/4, built around Zubayr Hamza’s 66 and Reeza Hendricks’ 50, with the pair sharing a 102-run opening stand.

Connor Esterhuizen provided the late fireworks with 38 off just 13 balls, while Rassie van der Dussen finished unbeaten on 31.

Media Release 1 Dolphins responded strongly through Jason Smith (66), Khaya Zondo (37) and Sean Gilson (38), reaching 188/4 after 19 overs and requiring 15 from the final over.

Lions, however, held firm at the death to restrict the Dolphins to 194/6.

Wiaan Mulder (2/31) and Codi Yusuf (2/38) led the bowling effort to secure the eight-run victory.

The Rand Club: Redemption

The “redemption” of the Rand Club is a fascinating mirror of the city’s broader transformation. In 2016, a group of businessmen and heritage enthusiasts stepped in to save the club from permanent closure. They didn’t just renovate the physical structure; they fundamentally “decolonized” the institution’s culture. Today, the Rand Club is a vibrant, multi-racial hub of Johannesburg’s intellectual and business elite. It has opened its doors to the public for events, tours, and as a co-working space for young entrepreneurs.

One of the most striking changes is in the art. While the walls are still lined with portraits of historical figures, they are now interspersed with contemporary African art and photography that challenges the old narratives. The club has transitioned from a secretive “fortress” of the colonial elite into a shared space for the city’s new generation of leaders. It remains a place where history is physically present—you can still sit in the same leather chairs where Rhodes sat—but the conversations happening in those chairs are now about the future of a democratic, African-led Johannesburg. It is a testament to the fact that even the most rigid institutions in “Joburg” must adapt or vanish.
