Giving and sharing are the core of the 1701 brand, a brand which came to life in a family kitchen when a cordon-bleu trained chef shared her special nougat recipe with her son. 1701 has continued to honour the essence of that original gift in their family kitchen through a creative and innovative collaboration with cookbook author and digital content creator, Naqiyah Mayat. The result is in an Eid-inspired nougat flavour which celebrates the legacy flavours of Sesame Halva and Almonds.

This collaboration between 1701 and Naqiyah Mayat was an alignment which proved to be the perfect marriage between innovative thinking and creativity in the luxury product realm; with consideration given to 1701’s ethos that there is nothing more important than showing someone what they mean to you through an honest expression of your feelings. Everything 1701 does, from the way they create their confectionery, through to packaging and the experience you have when you untie their signature ribbon, is inspired by and centred around this ideal.

Says 1701 Founder, Nick Scher: “1701 aspires to be a global brand based on the authenticity of its history and the passion of its creators. Our heart is in nougat and our soul is in giving. We want our 1701 experience to be nothing short of extraordinary.” This extends to the people we choose to collaborate with and our collaboration with Naqiyah echoes this ideal.

Naqiyah Mayat is a connoisseur of luxury, elegance and beauty whose lifestyle brand is built around a philosophy of sophistication and aspiration. This digital content creator is not only a wife and mother of four but is a sought-after tastemaker in the Indian and Muslim communities and a style force to be reckoned with. Offering her view on curating this Eid-inspired nougat with 1701, Naqiyah had this to say: “My insights stem from the duality of cultures I embody which in turn influence my unique take on food, travel, fashion and lifestyle. A family and lifestyle narrative is always top of mind and I consciously work towards ensuring it is included in my digital and master brand strategy. This collaboration with 1701 checked all those boxes for me.”

Curated 1701 Eid gift boxes filled with the new Eid-inspired flavour will be available for pre-order via the 1701 online store from Wednesday, 23 March 2022. To uphold the 1701 commitment to exceptional quality and freshness, the orders will only ship from the start of Ramadan on Saturday, 2 April. 1701 have also created an exclusive discount code, 1701xNaqiyah, which will entitle you to a discount of 10% on all orders, irrespective of value. Free shipping will apply for orders over R1000.00 in value.

Have you tried: Travelling to South Africa?

Did you know this about Johannesburg? Johannesburg’s traffic is brutal: According to figures released earlier in 2018, the city is the 2nd most congested city in South Africa (behind Cape Town). It’s the 44th most congested city globally. Johannesburg residents spent an average of 46 hours in peak traffic in 2017. The city has more than 7500 km of roads.

Constitution Hill: From Injustice to Justice

Constitution Hill is a living museum located on the ridge between Braamfontein and Hillbrow. It is a site of extreme contrasts, housing both the notorious Old Fort prison complex—where some of the most horrific human rights abuses of the 19th and 20th centuries occurred—and the modern South African Constitutional Court, the highest guardian of the country’s democracy. This site is often referred to as the “Robben Island of Johannesburg” because it incarcerated nearly every major figure in the liberation struggle, including Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. However, its history is far older than the anti-Apartheid struggle; it was originally built in 1893 as a prison by the Boer Republic and later converted into a military fort to defend the city against the British during the South African War.
