MAN Automotive, a renowned truck and bus manufacturer, celebrated another year of outstanding achievements at its highly anticipated Annual Dealer of The Year Awards ceremony. The event, which took place in Johannesburg on Thursday 16 May 2024, brought together employees, partners, and stakeholders to recognise and commend excellence within the MAN Automotive community.

The awards ceremony showcased outstanding achievements across various categories, including the Dealer of the Year, Sales Executives of the Year, Service Excellence, Customer Satisfaction, and MAN Financial Services Dealer of the Year. Each award category celebrated the remarkable contributions and dedication that MAN’s valued employees and partners demonstrated.

For over two decades, the Annual Dealer of The Year Awards have been a testament to MAN’s dedication to recognising exceptional performance and commitment within its workforce and dealer network throughout the Southern African region. Joined by the global executive board member Friedrich Baumann, this year’s event, theme “Driving Excellence,” encapsulated MAN’s precision, agility, and unwavering focus ethos.

MAN Truck and Bus Kimberley took home the prestigious Dealer of the Year award. Jan Aichinger, Managing Director at MAN Automotive South Africa, congratulated the winning dealer and said, “The easiest way to appreciate our employees and partners is to show and express gratitude on a daily basis. This forms part of our values, demonstrates great leadership, teamwork and contributes to staff morale. The team at MAN Automotive Kimberly including other award recipients have showcased this and these achievements are testament to that. These well-deserved awards serve as a reminder to continue striving for excellence and servicing our customers with pride.”

Earlier this year, the manufacturer was awarded the accolade of being a Top Employer for 2024. This was also evident at the awards ceremony when the brand recognised their long standing employees who have been with the company for 20, 30 and 40 years. These recognitions underscore MAN’s unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and employee empowerment across its vast network.

Ponte City: Transformation

As the “white flight” of the 1980s and 90s drained the inner city of capital, Ponte City underwent a dramatic and terrifying transformation. By the late 1990s, the building had become a “vertical slum” and a symbol of urban decay. It was famously “hijacked” by gangs; the retail levels were stripped, and the building became a fortress for drug dealing and human trafficking. The most haunting image from this era was the central core. Originally designed to be a light-filled courtyard, it became a literal trash heap. Residents on the upper floors would throw their refuse into the center of the building rather than taking it down. At its worst point, the trash in the core reached five stories high—a mountain of rotting debris, discarded furniture, and even, legend has it, the remains of those who had fallen or jumped.

During this period, the reputation of Ponte was so toxic that there was a serious proposal in 1998 to turn the entire skyscraper into a vertical prison. The plan was eventually scrapped, but the building remained a “no-go zone” for nearly a decade. The turnaround began in the mid-2000s when developers New Metro Property Group and later Dlala Nje began a massive, painstaking refurbishment. They cleared out the tons of trash from the core, restored the lifts (which had often been out of order, forcing residents to climb 50 flights of stairs), and implemented strict security protocols.
