More Than 318,000 Households Still Await Housing

19 June 2026 by Con Tributor

Statement by Khathutshelo Rasilingwane MPL – DA Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate:

Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) took the fight for housing in Ekurhuleni to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s Office together with residents of Ekurhuleni, calling on Premier Panyaza Lesufi to urgently intervene in the City’s worsening housing crisis.

Several major housing projects in Ekurhuleni have faced years of delays, abandonment, and vandalism despite millions of rands spent – this includes Winnie Mandela Extension 25, Mackenzieville Extension Two, Esselen, and Vosloorus Extension 9.

As projects deteriorate and refurbishment costs rise, thousands of families remain without adequate housing and continue to wait for homes.

As the DA Mayoral Candidate I believe that every resident deserves access to safe, secure and affordable housing.

The Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Ekurhuleni must:

  • Provide full transparency regarding the status of the housing list, including how many people are on the list and what progress, if any, has been made in clearing the backlog since 1996.
  • Investigate and address irregularities in allocation of houses, including corruption or favouritism.
  • Communicate a plan to eliminate the backlog, with timelines and measurable goals, so the community can hold the department accountable for delivering on its promises.

Housing is a constitutional right, not a political favour.

Residents cannot continue to pay the price for years of inefficiency, poor oversight and failed governance.

We will continue to stand with residents and fight for a government that delivers homes, restores dignity and puts people first as we urge residents to register to vote this weekend as all Voting Stations open, in preparation for the upcoming Local Government Election on 04 November 2026.

Only the DA will get Ekurhuleni working for all.

The Wilds: Profound Experience

One of the most profound experiences in The Wilds is standing on the Munro Drive side of the reserve at sunset. To your left, you have the historic mansions of Houghton, built by the mining magnates of the 1920s. Directly ahead, you have the pulsing, dense high-rises of Hillbrow and Berea. And beneath your feet, you have the ancient quartzite rock of the Witwatersrand, which has remained unchanged for millions of years. It is a place where the deep time of geology meets the frantic energy of a 21st-century African megacity.
