Mover and Shaker Phindile Shabalala

8 October 2026 by Con Tributor

Joburg Market Chief Risk Officer Phindile Shabalala has been named Runner-Up: Risk Leader of the Year 2026 at the Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) Awards – The Golden Circle.

The recognition places Shabalala among South Africa’s leading risk management professionals and acknowledges her leadership, strategic contribution and commitment to advancing the profession.

The award comes as Joburg Market continues to strengthen governance, operational resilience and strategic transformation. As a major fresh produce market and an important link in the agricultural and food distribution value chain, the Market operates in a complex environment involving producers, market agents, buyers, employees, logistics providers, regulators and other stakeholders.

As a municipal entity of the City of Johannesburg, Joburg Market also contributes to the City’s broader governance, accountability and service delivery objectives. Effective risk management is therefore critical to strengthening the organisation’s resilience and supporting sustainable operations.

Shabalala’s recognition at national professional level also highlights the importance of enterprise risk management across the municipal environment. It comes as Joburg Market advances its transformation agenda and works towards becoming a smarter, digitally enabled and service-oriented fresh produce market.

The achievement is a significant milestone for Shabalala and Joburg Market, reinforcing the value of strong risk leadership in supporting effective governance and long-term organisational resilience.

The Carlton Centre: Famous Visitors

At the peak of its prestige in the 1970s and 80s, the precinct was the ultimate address for high finance and luxury. It included the Carlton Hotel, a 30-story five-star icon that hosted everyone from Mick Jagger and Henry Kissinger to Margaret Thatcher. However, as the political landscape shifted in the 1990s and the “capital flight” to the northern suburbs began, the Carlton Centre became a victim of its own geography. The luxury hotel was “mothballed” in 1998 and remains a haunting, empty shell today, with its grand ballroom and 600 rooms frozen in time—a stark contrast to the bustling, gritty energy of the streets below.
