My SME and Digby Wells Support Local Enterprise Development Through Practical Leadership and Business Coaching

2 October 2026 by Con Tributor

The Enterprise and Supplier Development programme combines leadership development and practical business coaching to support community leaders and local entrepreneurs in Skimming and Leruleng, Limpopo.

My SME partnered with Digby Wells Environmental to deliver an Enterprise and Supplier Development programme designed to support community leaders and local entrepreneurs in the villages of Skimming and Leruleng in Limpopo. The programme combined practical leadership development with entry-level business coaching, providing participants with knowledge and tools that could be applied within their organisations, businesses and communities.

The programme focused on developing practical leadership and business capabilities. Leadership training was delivered to traditional Kgoro and SRG leadership structures, with key focus areas including self-belief, character development, operational ethics and organisational vision mapping. Alongside this, local business forums received business coaching covering Business 101, product and service development, business strategy and business modelling.

A key focus of the programme was helping participants look beyond immediate challenges and consider longer-term opportunities for development. Business coaching encouraged entrepreneurs to understand their markets, strengthen their products and services, consider opportunities beyond their immediate communities and develop practical approaches to building sustainable businesses. The programme also emphasised that meaningful development extends beyond once-off training, with continued mentorship, practical application and longer-term support forming part of the broader approach.

The programme was delivered in partnership with Digby Wells Environmental, supporting community leadership and local enterprise development in Skimming and Leruleng. By bringing together leadership development and business coaching, the initiative addressed both the organisational and business-development aspects of building stronger local enterprise capabilities.

“Business development is not only about starting or growing a business. It is also about building the leadership, strategy and practical capabilities needed to sustain that business over time. Through this programme, our focus was on giving community leaders and entrepreneurs practical knowledge they could apply within their own organisations and businesses.”

The results speak for themselves:

  • Leadership training delivered to traditional Kgoro and SRG leadership structures
  • Business coaching provided to local business forums
  • Participants introduced to Business 101, product and service development, business strategy and business modelling
  • Leadership development focused on self-belief, character development, operational ethics and organisational vision mapping
  • Entrepreneurs encouraged to explore opportunities and markets beyond their immediate communities
  • A foundation established for continued mentorship and longer-term business development

The programme included:

  • Practical leadership development
  • Business 101 and essential business fundamentals
  • Product and service development
  • Business strategy and business modelling
  • Market development and opportunity identification
  • Communication, leadership and organisational development
  • Continued mentorship and practical business support
  • Progress tracking and longer-term development planning

Closing:

The Digby Wells and My SME partnership highlights the role that practical Enterprise and Supplier Development programmes can play in strengthening leadership and business capabilities within local communities. By combining leadership training with practical business coaching, the programme provided participants with knowledge and frameworks that can support continued development beyond the initial training.

The Maboneng Precinct: Architecture

Maboneng is architecturally distinct because it rejects the “demolish and rebuild” philosophy. Instead, it embraces adaptive reuse. The Bioscope, South Africa’s only independent cinema, operates out of an old industrial space; The Living Room is a lush rooftop oasis that offers panoramic views of the skyline from atop a concrete shell; and the Museum of African Design (MOAD) was housed in a massive 1970s warehouse. This aesthetic—exposed brick, industrial steel, and vibrant street art—has become the visual shorthand for “cool” Johannesburg. The murals here are particularly significant; they aren’t just decoration but are often massive social commentaries by local and international street artists like Faith47 and ROA, turning the very walls of the city into a public gallery.

However, Maboneng is also at the center of a complex debate regarding gentrification and social integration. Critics argue that while the precinct is a “bubble” of safety and creativity, it often stands in stark contrast to the surrounding poverty of the inner city. The challenge for Maboneng has always been how to be an engine for economic growth without alienating the residents who lived there during the “dark” years. In response, many initiatives within the precinct focus on local entrepreneurship, such as the Market on Main, which provides a platform for local food vendors and designers every Sunday.
