JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Many South Africans look at their credit record for the first time on the day a loan, a lease or a phone contract is declined. OpenCredit, a credit education service in Rosebank, Johannesburg, has published a set of credit check guides that explain what the records show and how to read them before that day comes.
Score and report
A credit score is a quick number. It changes when payment history shifts, when accounts are opened or closed, or when enquiries are added, and it says nothing about income or household spending. A credit report goes deeper, with accounts, repayment behaviour, enquiries, defaults, judgments and other records listed line by line. OpenCredit’s guides walk through each part, from repayment profiles, arrears and adverse listings to the identity, address and employment details that should be checked first.
“People fixate on the number and skip the report, and the report is where the mistakes are,” said OpenCredit’s credit education lead. “An old address, an account you never opened, an enquiry you don’t recognise. Reading the lines one by one is dull, but it is the part that tells you what to ask about.”
Before a big application
Separate guides cover home loan readiness, car finance readiness, tenant record checks, employment screening, a student credit check for younger adults, and a pre-application review. Budget pages set the score beside income and expenses, including card repayments, store accounts and debit order dates that clash with payday. A dispute prep pack lists the documents and questions to have ready before raising a query about a record.
Debt review, with limits stated
OpenCredit explains how the National Credit Act frames consumer credit and how debt review works for over-indebted consumers. It is clear about its role: the guides are general information, not personalised legal or financial advice, and anyone unsure about a debt review status or court order is referred to a registered debt counsellor or the National Credit Regulator.
The guides serve readers across South Africa from Rosebank, and questions can be sent through the OpenCredit website.
