Patients suffer from cancer treatment delay

30 January 2024 by Alan

Advertorial:
Patients suffer from cancer treatment delay:

Dear Editor

About 3000 cancer patients at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital are suffering because a treatment deal with private hospitals has not been finalised despite R784 million budgeted in April last year.

The Gauteng Health Department has provided no information on the outcome of the tender issued in October 2023 for the outsourcing of radiation services for cancer patients.

Despite an agreement to work with the Cancer Alliance and Section27 on this matter, they have ignored them, which is worrying.

According to the Cancer Alliance, the tender had a compulsory briefing session which many suppliers of oncology services were unable to attend, and were therefore excluded from the tender.

This raises suspicions about whether the tender has been botched, instead of getting the best deal from the best supplier.

Meanwhile, the delays are risking the lives of hundreds of cancer patients who need treatment as soon as possible. This includes those with breast, colon and prostate cancer.

The DA calls on the Department to reveal what is happening with this tender, and to ensure that the R784 million budget is used before the end of the financial year in two months time.

Regards

Jack Bloom MPL
DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health

Ponte City: The Vertical Microcosm

Designed by architect Rodney Grosskopff, Ponte City was envisioned as the ultimate in “jet-set” urban living. It was the first circular skyscraper in Africa, designed with a hollow “core” or “atrium” that allowed light into the apartments from both sides. When it opened, it was one of the most prestigious addresses in Johannesburg. The top three floors were massive, multi-level penthouses equipped with saunas, wine cellars, and shag carpeting, offering 360-degree views of the Highveld. The bottom levels featured high-end retail and even a bowling alley. It was a playground for the young, wealthy, and white during the height of the Apartheid era.
