QGC partners with Marula Mining

31 January 2023 by Alan

Signing on as a majority shareholder and major investor QGC is set to transform the African-focused mining and development company and fast-track its progress.

“With over 19 years mining experience, I think I can add a lot of value to the company. I have developed over 47 projects to the mining stage, have run two large scale mining companies and currently have 9 mines under my management. QGC has the network to open international partners for sales and marketing and we intend to fund the company and bolster the value of the assets within a short period of time. We want to make sure this is a company that we can all look to for massive growth and future profits. After careful due diligence and geology, we believe Marula Mining is a big play and we intend to throw a lot of our time and efforts to get it there during this year” says mining magnate, Quinton van der burgh.
“With Quinton, we can now go full throttle and realize the assets we have.” says Marula Mining CEO Jason Brewer.

Marula Mining is a battery metals investment and exploration company and has interests in several high-value mine projects in Africa; Blesberg Lithium and Tantalum Mine in South Africa, Nkombwa Hill Project in Zambia and Kinusi Copper mine in Tanzania.

“Lithium is one of the most sought-after commodities for the electric vehicles sector, for lithium-ion batteries and you have trading prices at an all-time high”, said Brewer.

“Renewables are a very exciting space to be moving into and it’s through joint ventures that QGC is able to do so, at the same time expanding our commodities portfolio”, says Quinton van der Burgh, Q Global Commodities CEO

Marula Mining is now delivering its first shipment of high-grade run-of-mine (RoM) lithium ore at its Blesberg lithium and tantalum mine in the Northern Cape. The first shipment falls under a $ 5 million Lithium prepayment facility to a South African subsidiary of global commodity group Traxys.

Marula’s shares are quoted on the AQUIS Stock Exchange (AQSE) and they are exploring opportunities to dual list on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM Market and Kenya’s Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Marula aims at identifying and investing in advanced and high-value mining projects throughout East, Central and Southern Africa that can deliver rapidly for its shareholders and can be taken through to production and generate positive returns for all stakeholders.

“Our Board and management team aims to establish Marula as a socially and environmentally responsible, sustainable, and profitable producer of critical metals and commodities that are of increasingly strategic importance to modern technologies and the global economy,” said Brewer.

This is echoed by QGC, a company that historically places great emphasis on the principle of sustainability of the environment as it encompasses the assumption of intergenerational equity.

Top Star Drive-In: Destroyed by What Created it

However, the very thing that created the Top Star eventually destroyed it. Because the early miners had used crude methods, the Ferreira Dump—and dozens of others like it—still contained significant traces of gold. As the price of gold rose and new chemical extraction technologies (like the carbon-in-pulp process) made it profitable to “mine the waste,” the ground beneath the Top Star became more valuable than the cinema itself. In 2006, despite fierce opposition from heritage groups who argued that the dump and the drive-in were culturally significant landmarks, the projectors were turned off for the last time.

The reclamation of the dump was a staggering industrial feat. Starting in 2008, mining giant DRDGold used high-pressure water cannons to “monitor” the dump, turning 5 million tons of solid earth back into a liquid slurry. This slurry was then piped 40 kilometers across the province to a processing plant in Brakpan. By 2011, the “mountain” had completely vanished. The 50-meter-high plateau that had dominated the southern skyline for a century was reduced to a flat, dusty crater.

The disappearance of the Top Star is a poignant symbol of Johannesburg’s “extractive” nature. It is a city that consumes itself to stay alive; even its historical landmarks are subject to the fluctuating price of minerals on the London and New York stock exchanges. Today, if you drive along the M2, there is an empty space in the sky where the Top Star used to be. While the reclamation removed a source of toxic dust and “acid mine drainage,” it also erased a piece of the city’s collective memory. The land where the gold-flecked mountain once stood is now being rehabilitated for light industrial use, proving that in eGoli, even the horizon is for sale if there’s enough gold hidden inside it.
