Reading Riot National Literacy Campaign Success

29 July 2026 by Con Tributor

JOHANNESBURG: Following months of collaboration, innovation and nationwide engagement, BAIC South Africa, BAIC Finance – a product of Absa, Absa Workplace Banking and EyeBrainGym are celebrating the successful conclusion of the 2026 Reading Riot campaign – a partnership that has demonstrated how education, business and community impact can come together to create meaningful change.

What began as a vehicle sponsorship evolved into a multi-faceted national initiative that not only championed literacy and recognised South Africa’s educators, but also created new opportunities for brand growth, community engagement and financial inclusion.

A Campaign That Delivered Impact

The Reading Riot competition saw more than 630 schools register across South Africa, encouraging Grade 6 learners to strengthen their reading abilities through EyeBrainGym’s innovative visual learning methodology. Throughout the campaign, learners progressed through school, provincial and national competition rounds before the country’s top finalists gathered at the University of Pretoria for the National Grand Finale on 27 June 2026.

The campaign culminated in a memorable celebration of educational excellence, with the national winning learner being crowned and the winning teacher from the Western Cape receiving the keys to a brand-new BAIC X55 Plus Premium – recognising the invaluable role teachers play in shaping future generations.

Creating Shared Value Beyond the Competition

The partnership delivered measurable value for every stakeholder involved.

For education, Reading Riot reached hundreds of schools nationwide while creating greater awareness around literacy development and innovative learning techniques.

For teachers, the campaign placed educators at the centre of the celebration, rewarding excellence and acknowledging their lasting impact on learners and communities.

For BAIC South Africa and BAIC Finance, the initiative generated more than R2.3 million in earned media exposure value (as at 24 June 2026), significantly strengthening brand awareness while positioning BAIC alongside a meaningful national purpose.

Unlocking New Opportunities

One of the campaign’s greatest successes was the momentum it created beyond the competition itself.

Strong support from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education opened opportunities to engage with approximately 4,700 schools across the province, including participation in provincial teacher workshops across five districts. These events created valuable opportunities for BAIC dealerships to showcase vehicles, engage directly with educators and build stronger relationships within local communities.

On-the-ground activations connected the BAIC brand with income-earning teachers who closely align with the brand’s target market, while Absa’s extensive communication platforms introduced BAIC to audiences across the country, accelerating awareness for a growing automotive brand in South Africa.

Driving Collaboration Across the Business

The campaign also strengthened collaboration within the Absa ecosystem.

During the national Absa Branch Sales Conference held on 17 and 18 June, frontline colleagues were introduced to the BAIC Finance offering through vehicle displays, presentations and product activations. National branch QTV screens and ATMs further extended campaign visibility, while attractive staff and teacher vehicle offers – including discounts of up to 15% for staff, up to 12% for teachers and R699 per month vehicle insurance for the first year – helped build confidence and sales readiness among customer-facing teams.

In the final weeks of the campaign, BAIC Finance and Absa Workplace Banking also launched a dedicated National Teachers Campaign. Although introduced over a relatively short two-week period, the campaign highlighted significant future potential to grow sales, strengthen brand affinity and further support South Africa’s teaching community through tailored mobility solutions.

Building a Lasting Legacy

The Reading Riot partnership has demonstrated the power of combining education, mobility and financial inclusion to create lasting value.

By recognising educators, supporting literacy development and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with communities across South Africa, BAIC South Africa, BAIC Finance, Absa Workplace Banking and EyeBrainGym have laid the foundation for a partnership that extends well beyond a single campaign.

As the celebration continues with the provincial vehicle handover ceremony for the winning teacher in Cape Town, the campaign leaves behind an enduring legacy – one that has inspired learners, celebrated educators and strengthened the belief that meaningful partnerships can create real opportunities for South Africa’s future.

The Maboneng Precinct: Architecture

Maboneng is architecturally distinct because it rejects the “demolish and rebuild” philosophy. Instead, it embraces adaptive reuse. The Bioscope, South Africa’s only independent cinema, operates out of an old industrial space; The Living Room is a lush rooftop oasis that offers panoramic views of the skyline from atop a concrete shell; and the Museum of African Design (MOAD) was housed in a massive 1970s warehouse. This aesthetic—exposed brick, industrial steel, and vibrant street art—has become the visual shorthand for “cool” Johannesburg. The murals here are particularly significant; they aren’t just decoration but are often massive social commentaries by local and international street artists like Faith47 and ROA, turning the very walls of the city into a public gallery.

However, Maboneng is also at the center of a complex debate regarding gentrification and social integration. Critics argue that while the precinct is a “bubble” of safety and creativity, it often stands in stark contrast to the surrounding poverty of the inner city. The challenge for Maboneng has always been how to be an engine for economic growth without alienating the residents who lived there during the “dark” years. In response, many initiatives within the precinct focus on local entrepreneurship, such as the Market on Main, which provides a platform for local food vendors and designers every Sunday.
