It was an extravaganza of excellent surfing at Victoria Bay as the waves continued to pour down the point for day two of the Rip Curl GromSearch tournament. This competition, the series’s second out of five contests, has been blessed with waves since the first siren yesterday. It looks like another great day on the forecast for tomorrow.

It was straight into the second round of the Premier U16 division, with Josh Jefferis scoring the highest score of the round for an excellent open-faced wave on which he performed several risky moves for high rewards. Others who were impressive in this division were Levi Kolnick, Cooper Smith and Loghann Tilsley.

The U14 Girls’ semi-finals were loaded heats. In the first semi, Emily Jenkinson showed everyone that her two victories at the recent Rip Curl GromSearch #1 at Long Beach in Kommetjie were just the beginning. She surfed with speed and flair, banking a 7.67 (out of ten) for her first score before throwing caution to the wind and hooking into a big set wave. She performed a series of high-risk turns with speed and flow to be awarded a 9.5 from the impressed judges for a heat total of 17.17. Jasmine Venter was second, with Mikayla Jefferis and Sophia Jackson in the minor positions.

Standout surfers in the U18 Girls semi-finals included Sarah Scott, Chloe Ribbink, Louise Lepront and Anastasia Venter, while the surfers who were excelling in the U14 Boys divisions were Kai Stubbs, Nathan Tayler, Loghann Tilsley and Adam Faclier.

In the third U16 Boys Quarterfinal heat 3, Rory Dace was trailing in third place, and with just a few seconds on the clock, he picked up a good-looking but small inside wave. Luckily the wave grew as it moved down the point, allowing Dace to sneak in at second place, beating Josh Malherbe and eliminating him from the event.

In the next heat, the U16 Boys Quarterfinal heat 4, Cooper Smith found himself in a similar position, needing a final scoring wave to jump into second place. Once again, with only seconds on the clock, he lucked into a wave and managed to do a few critical turns with speed and flow to be awarded the score needed to get into second position and advance.

The event resumes tomorrow at 07:30 with the U16 Boys division. Heats and the schedule can be found on the Liveheats page.

Have you tried: Whale and Dolphin Watching in Algoa Bay?

Did you know this about Johannesburg? The city has hosted the finals for the FIFA World Cup, Cricket World Cup and IRB Rugby World Cup: The 2010 FIFA World Cup final was played at FNB Stadium. A large soccer ball was fitted to the Hillbrow Tower during this time. The city also hosted the 2003 Cricket World Cup final (at The Wanderers) and the 1995 IRB Rugby World Cup final (at Ellis Park Stadium). London is the only other city in the world that has hosted all 3 World Cup finals.

Museum Africa: Art Collection

The museum’s collection is staggering, housing approximately 850,000 objects that range from the prehistoric to the contemporary. It is one of the few institutions that attempts to tell the story of Southern Africa from the Stone Age to the nuclear age. The “Johannesburg Transformations” exhibition is the museum’s centerpiece, dragging the visitor through the chaotic evolution of the city. It doesn’t shy away from the grime; it features detailed reconstructions of “shack life,” the illegal “shebeens” (speakeasies) of the 1950s, and the vibrant but overcrowded “backyard rooms” that defined the black urban experience during Apartheid. One of its most sobering permanent displays is the “Tried for Treason” exhibit, which meticulously documents the 1956 Treason Trial. Visitors can see the portraits of all 156 accused—including Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and Albertina Sisulu—and read the “little red books” placed beneath each photo, where the public is invited to write their own reflections and facts about these liberation icons.

Deep within the museum’s labyrinthine halls, you’ll find specialized branches that are world-class in their own right. The Bensusan Museum of Photography sits on the top floor, acting as a shrine to the visual history of the continent. It contains everything from rare 19th-century daguerreotypes to the legendary photojournalism of the Drum magazine era. Meanwhile, the Geology Museum houses over 17,000 specimens, including a definitive collection of the rocks and minerals that made Johannesburg possible. It is a place where you can see the actual gold-bearing conglomerate reefs of the Witwatersrand up close, stripped of their commercial value and presented as scientific wonders.
