Rip Curl Gromsearch Long Beach Pres. By Sea Harvest – Entries Are Open:

Long Beach, Cape Town – It’s all systems go for the Rip Curl GromSearch Long Beach presented by Sea Harvest – the first contest in the four-event series for 2025.

The Rip Curl GromSearch Long Beach is a three-day contest over the weekend of 21 – 23 February. It will feature U12, U14, U16 and U18 boys and girls divisions, and the top three out of the four events will count towards the Rip Curl GromSearch series results.

Premier Division

The U16 division is the Premier Division and is the focus of the series.

The Rip Curl GromSearch Long Beach will be followed by a series of events in Port Alfred, Dairy Beach, and Seal Point, Cape St Francis, for the finals. Surfers who wish to enter the Cape Town contest can do so HERE – remember that you must become a 2025 SSA member HERE before entering.

“We are looking forward to kicking the year off with the much anticipated Rip Curl Gromsearch #1 at Long Beach,” said Surfing South Africa General Manager Rezar De Nicker.

“It has been a few months since we wrapped up the 2024 contest calendar, and we know the groms are itching to put on a contest vest again and give it their all. Bring on 2025!”

The Rip Curl GromSearch contests are fun events that allow kids to compete against the best surfers in the same age bracket from their country. This format gives these groms insight into a life of competitive surfing. It gives them the invaluable experience of surfing and competing in different waves nationwide.

“As we roll into the 2025 contest year, we are very stoked to have the Rip Curl Gromsearch on our calendar for 2025,” continued De Nicker.

“With four stops this year at prime locations in the prime time for epic waves, the Rip Curl Gromsearch promises to showcase epic surfing and bring through old and new friendly rivalries amongst the groms.”

The Rip Curl GromSearch contests are all premier SAST events, with 1,000 points going to the winners and prizemoney per all premier events.

Contestants must be registered as members of Surfing South Africa to compete in this Premier SAST Event.

The Carlton Centre: A Monument of Concrete and Contradiction

Rising 223 meters into the Highveld sky, the Carlton Centre was for nearly half a century the undisputed “king” of the African skyline. Completed in 1973, it held the title of the tallest building in Africa for 46 years—a reign that only ended in 2019 with the completion of The Leonardo in Sandton. It was designed by the prestigious American firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (the same minds behind the Burj Khalifa and Chicago’s Willis Tower), and its brutalist, reinforced concrete design was intended to be a “city within a city,” a symbol of South Africa’s then-booming industrial and mining economy.
