Advertorial:
SA U19 Men And Women 2024/25 Home Internationals Confirmed:

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today confirmed the upcoming tours for the South Africa U19 Men’s and Women’s teams for the 2024/25 season in preparation for future ICC age-group tournaments.

The SA U19 Women will start their summer of cricket with a Youth T20 International (T20I) series against Ireland U19 in Tshwane from 28 October to 01 November.

The five-match series will be held at the Groenkloof Oval in the capital city, as head coach Dinesha Devnarain’s side builds towards the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 held in Malaysia.

The SA U19 Men will face England U19 in a multi-format tour from 17 January – 06 February in the Western Cape.

The three-match Youth One-Day Internationals (ODI) series will get underway on 17 and 19 January at the Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town, before the series wraps up on 22 January at the Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

The tour will conclude with a two-match Youth Test series from 27 January – 06 February at the Coertzenburg Cricket Club in Stellenbosch and the Western Province Cricket Club respectively.

A 50-over warm-up match for the touring nation has also been scheduled, with Western Province’s junior side taking on England on 14 January in Cape Town.

CSA Head of High Performance, Grant van Velden commented:

“Competitive international cricket is invaluable for the growth of both our SA U19 Women’s and Men’s teams. These tours are crucial stepping stones as we prepare for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup and the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup over the next 18 months.

“Hosting youth international cricket in South Africa not only provides our young cricketers with vital match experience but also showcases the exceptional talent we have in our country. It’s an opportunity to inspire the next generation of players and fans.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Ireland and England cricket boards for their collaboration in making these tours a reality. The cooperation is instrumental in providing our teams with the high-level competition needed to excel on the world stage,” he concluded.

The Geological Miracle of the Witwatersrand

The very existence of Johannesburg is a geological fluke. Unlike most major global cities, Johannesburg was not built near a river, a coast, or a natural harbor. It sits 1,753 meters above sea level on a rocky ridge called the Witwatersrand (Ridge of White Waters). This ridge is the edge of the world’s largest known gold deposit, formed over 2 billion years ago when an ancient inland sea began to evaporate, leaving behind layers of gold-bearing conglomerate.

When George Harrison, an Australian prospector, stumbled upon an outcrop of gold on the farm Langlaagte in 1886, he triggered a “gold rush” that changed the course of African history. Within a decade, a dusty collection of tents and wagons transformed into a permanent city of brick and mortar. The “Main Reef” proved so vast that it eventually produced nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in human history. This geological wealth dictated the city’s layout: the mining belt runs east-to-west across the city’s center, creating a physical divide between the wealthy northern suburbs and the industrial, working-class south. Today, while most mines within the city limits have closed due to the extreme depth and cost of extraction (some mines reached over 3.9 kilometers underground), the physical legacy remains in the form of “mine dumps”—massive yellow-white hills of crushed rock and sand that define the Joburg skyline.
