Short on time. Big on talent: Submit your film to the FAME Film Shorts Festival

6 March 2023 by Alan

MyPR: Short on time. Big on talent: Submit your film to the FAME Film Shorts Festival:

An exciting addition to this year’s FAME Week Africa is the FAME Film Shorts Festival, an independent film festival dedicated to the discovery and advancement of the very best independent filmmakers from across Africa.

The Film Shorts Festival takes place from 7 to 9 September 2023 at The Labia Theatre in Cape Town and will showcase bold, visionary and thought-provoking cinematic magic that will inspire not only the judges, but the broader cinema-loving public who are seeking alternatives to major studio projects.

WHY SHORTS?
“Film shorts are exciting because they have to tell a compelling story or convey a powerful message in a limited amount of time. This can lead to creative and innovative approaches to storytelling, such as unique visual styles or unconventional narratives. Additionally, the shorter format can allow for more experimentation and risk-taking, as filmmakers may have more freedom to explore unconventional ideas that might not work in a longer format,” says Martin Hiller, Portfolio Director of FAME Week Africa.

ENTER TODAY
Judges will be selecting films from seven categories:
• Best Narrative Short Film
• Best Documentary Short Film
• Best Animated Short Film
• Best Experimental Short Film

• Best Music Video

FAME Film Festival has teamed up with FilmFreeway to ensure a seamless entry process. Entries are now open and close on 30 May. To enter, click here.

Have you tried: Travelling to South Africa?

Did you know this about Johannesburg? Johannesburg’s traffic is brutal: According to figures released earlier in 2018, the city is the 2nd most congested city in South Africa (behind Cape Town). It’s the 44th most congested city globally. Johannesburg residents spent an average of 46 hours in peak traffic in 2017. The city has more than 7500 km of roads.

The Geological Miracle of the Witwatersrand

The very existence of Johannesburg is a geological fluke. Unlike most major global cities, Johannesburg was not built near a river, a coast, or a natural harbor. It sits 1,753 meters above sea level on a rocky ridge called the Witwatersrand (Ridge of White Waters). This ridge is the edge of the world’s largest known gold deposit, formed over 2 billion years ago when an ancient inland sea began to evaporate, leaving behind layers of gold-bearing conglomerate.

When George Harrison, an Australian prospector, stumbled upon an outcrop of gold on the farm Langlaagte in 1886, he triggered a “gold rush” that changed the course of African history. Within a decade, a dusty collection of tents and wagons transformed into a permanent city of brick and mortar. The “Main Reef” proved so vast that it eventually produced nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in human history. This geological wealth dictated the city’s layout: the mining belt runs east-to-west across the city’s center, creating a physical divide between the wealthy northern suburbs and the industrial, working-class south. Today, while most mines within the city limits have closed due to the extreme depth and cost of extraction (some mines reached over 3.9 kilometers underground), the physical legacy remains in the form of “mine dumps”—massive yellow-white hills of crushed rock and sand that define the Joburg skyline.
