SubAlu Sublimates Photographs Onto Aluminium Panels in Randburg, From A4 Gifts and Square Prints to A1 Statement Pieces and Panoramas

RANDBURG, South Africa – A photograph printed on paper and framed behind glass picks up every window reflection in a bright South African room. SubAlu, a print studio in Randburg, Johannesburg, dye sublimates images into coated aluminium instead. Its metal print range is aimed at photographers, artists, interior designers and businesses.

Sizes and shapes

Panels run from A4 and A3 through A2 to A1 for foyers and boardroom walls, each in gloss or matte. Square prints come in 200 mm, 300 mm and 500 mm. Small, medium and large panoramas suit skylines, seascapes and Karoo landscapes, and slim and large portrait formats suit fashion, architecture and narrow entrance walls.

The finish changes the picture

White gloss gives the most brightness and contrast, and white matte gives smooth colour with fewer reflections. Brushed gloss and brushed matte let the metal show through the lighter parts of an image, which suits chrome, water and industrial subjects, while white panels keep skin tones more even. Black edge, silver edge and rounded corner panels change how the piece reads on the wall.

“The print we try hardest to talk people out of is a wedding portrait on brushed aluminium,” said SubAlu’s prepress technician. “Brushed looks wonderful on a motorbike or a city at night. On faces the metal shows through and skin can go grey. We would rather run a test panel than hand over an A1 print the client is unsure about.”

Hanging it

Float mount panels hang off the wall on a hidden rear mount, rail mounts carry larger panels, and standoff and flush fittings give a more architectural or lower profile look. Multi-panel layouts and triptychs are planned so a set reads as one image, and test panels and reprint matching keep colour consistent when a hotel, practice or retail group orders several pieces.

Every file is checked for crop, clarity and resolution before production. Panels are made in Randburg and delivered to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Midrand, Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha. Print files reach the studio through the SubAlu website.

Museum Africa: The Memory of the Market

Long before it was a sanctuary for artifacts, this building was the Johannesburg Municipal Fruit and Vegetable Market, completed in 1913. At the time, it was an architectural marvel of the industrial age, featuring a massive, vaulted roof supported by reinforced concrete and steel—a design intended to keep the produce cool in the biting Highveld sun. The site was chosen for its proximity to the railway lines, allowing fresh goods from across Southern Africa to be funneled directly into the heart of the city. For decades, it was a place of frantic, multi-racial commerce where the air was thick with the smell of citrus and the shouts of auctioneers. In 1994—the same year South Africa held its first democratic elections—the market was transformed into Museum Africa, symbolically turning a site of physical sustenance into one of intellectual and historical nourishment.
