On a Sunday morning, Maboneng is perhaps the most diverse place in South Africa. You will see Ethiopian coffee ceremonies happening next to artisanal gin bars, and Zulu dancers performing in the street while international tourists browse through vintage vinyl. It is a microcosm of the “New South Africa”—messy, vibrant, occasionally precarious, but undeniably alive. It proved that the “City of Gold” didn’t need to dig deeper into the earth to find value; it just needed to look at its own abandoned streets with a bit of imagination.
