Designed by architect Rodney Grosskopff, Ponte City was envisioned as the ultimate in “jet-set” urban living. It was the first circular skyscraper in Africa, designed with a hollow “core” or “atrium” that allowed light into the apartments from both sides. When it opened, it was one of the most prestigious addresses in Johannesburg. The bottom levels featured high-end retail and even a bowling alley. It was a playground for the young, wealthy, and white during the height of the Apartheid era.
