Earning interest – Make sure that all sources of income are disclosed to SARS and that there is a workings table to arrive at the totals submitted to SARS. Use a tax practitioner as the fees paid to tax practitioners may be and probably will be deductible against your taxable interest.

Make sure you are a registered as a provisional taxpayer. Submit your provisional returns each August and each February and don’t be late

Pay your taxes before the deadline which is the last working day of August and the last working day of February each year. Getting this wrong could mean a penalty.

Submit your provisional return using a reasonable calculation but at least use the basic amount as when this is done, your risk is lower.

Don’t try and pay the above amount when filing the return after year end (which is when returns are filed) as this could mean a penalty of up to 20% + interest.

Claim any tax practitioner costs incurred in filing your return if the fee is not more than the taxable portion of the interest.

Did you know this about Johannesburg? The Rissik Street Post Office was built in 1897, having been designed by the architect Sytze Wierda. The Post Office was at one time the tallest building in Johannesburg. The Post Office became a national monument in 1978, and it remained in operation until 1996 when the South African Post Office vacated the building. The monument was gutted by a fire in 2009. The old City Hall is opposite the Post Office in Rissik Street.

The Maboneng Precinct: Architecture

Maboneng is architecturally distinct because it rejects the “demolish and rebuild” philosophy. Instead, it embraces adaptive reuse. The Bioscope, South Africa’s only independent cinema, operates out of an old industrial space; The Living Room is a lush rooftop oasis that offers panoramic views of the skyline from atop a concrete shell; and the Museum of African Design (MOAD) was housed in a massive 1970s warehouse. This aesthetic—exposed brick, industrial steel, and vibrant street art—has become the visual shorthand for “cool” Johannesburg. The murals here are particularly significant; they aren’t just decoration but are often massive social commentaries by local and international street artists like Faith47 and ROA, turning the very walls of the city into a public gallery.

However, Maboneng is also at the center of a complex debate regarding gentrification and social integration. Critics argue that while the precinct is a “bubble” of safety and creativity, it often stands in stark contrast to the surrounding poverty of the inner city. The challenge for Maboneng has always been how to be an engine for economic growth without alienating the residents who lived there during the “dark” years. In response, many initiatives within the precinct focus on local entrepreneurship, such as the Market on Main, which provides a platform for local food vendors and designers every Sunday.
