The exciting PEP mini Netball programme is back, bigger and better!:

  • PEP mini Netball expands to three additional provinces

April 2024, Johannesburg: Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to inspiring and empowering young girls, PEP, Africa’s largest single brand retailer in partnership with South African Schools Netball (SASN) has decided to expand the footprint of the PEP mini Netball programme to three additional provinces following on from last year’s resounding success. 2024 will see 30 festivals being supported across six provinces to the development of youth netball in South Africa.

Initially launched in Gauteng, Free State and the Western Cape, the fun filled festivals will now extend their reach to Limpopo, North-West and the Northern Cape. This expansion reflects PEP’s commitment to making a positive difference in the communities in which it operates by promoting inclusivity. The festivals provide more opportunities for young girls to learn and master the basics of netball while building their self-confidence through teamwork, learning and play.

Beyers van der Merwe, Chief Marketing Officer at PEP, expressed enthusiasm for the programme’s growth, stating, “PEP mini Netball festivals offer a dynamic platform where young players showcase their passion and developing skills on the netball courts. This year promises to be even more remarkable as we expand into more provinces reaching thousands of aspiring players and coaches nationwide. For us, it is not merely about introducing a sport; it’s about fostering inclusivity, building confidence, and promoting active lifestyles and a love for the game.”

“By supporting 30 festivals this year, we aspire to create inclusive and supportive environments where young players can be inspired to aim high and have fun while they learn and grow,” adds van der Merwe.

The festivals kicked off on 02 March 2024 in Springs, east of Johannesburg, setting the stage for an exciting netball season ahead. Di Woolley, President of South African Schools Netball (SASN) commended PEP’s initiative emphasising its positive impact, “The PEP mini Netball festivals have demonstrated the effectiveness in promoting youth development through sports and providing an opportunity for children from diverse backgrounds to develop essential sport and life skills. We applaud PEP’s commitment to broadening the reach and impact of PEP mini netball and in doing so, nurturing the potential of even more young girls.”

The Maboneng Precinct: Architecture

Maboneng is architecturally distinct because it rejects the “demolish and rebuild” philosophy. Instead, it embraces adaptive reuse. The Bioscope, South Africa’s only independent cinema, operates out of an old industrial space; The Living Room is a lush rooftop oasis that offers panoramic views of the skyline from atop a concrete shell; and the Museum of African Design (MOAD) was housed in a massive 1970s warehouse. This aesthetic—exposed brick, industrial steel, and vibrant street art—has become the visual shorthand for “cool” Johannesburg. The murals here are particularly significant; they aren’t just decoration but are often massive social commentaries by local and international street artists like Faith47 and ROA, turning the very walls of the city into a public gallery.

However, Maboneng is also at the center of a complex debate regarding gentrification and social integration. Critics argue that while the precinct is a “bubble” of safety and creativity, it often stands in stark contrast to the surrounding poverty of the inner city. The challenge for Maboneng has always been how to be an engine for economic growth without alienating the residents who lived there during the “dark” years. In response, many initiatives within the precinct focus on local entrepreneurship, such as the Market on Main, which provides a platform for local food vendors and designers every Sunday.
