Advertorial:
The Soweto Central Chorus and Friends:

Prepare for an unforgettable harmonious journey as the Soweto Central Chorus proudly presents ‘The Soweto Central Chorus and Friends.’ Join us for a soul-stirring evening on Friday, 8 December 2023, at the iconic Rhema Bible Church.

Embarking on a musical evolution, the Soweto Central Chorus curates an electrifying showcase with an A-list lineup, including the legendary Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Renowned for their enchanting Isichathamiya style and winner of multiple awards, including five Grammy Awards dedicated to Nelson Mandela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo promises to headline an unforgettable night.

Joining this symphony of talent are luminaries such as the versatile Khaya Mthethwa, Afro pop sensation AZANA, the incomparable Manu Worldstar, the esteemed Kekelingo of the Muffinz, and the homegrown sensation Thando Zide. All these phenomenal artists will share the stage with the Soweto Central Chorus.

More than just a concert, this is a celebration of evolution, integration, and connection—a sonic tapestry weaving through genres from Isichathamiya to Afrobeats, uniting hearts through spirituality.

Guiding you through this musical odyssey are the dynamic duo of the charismatic Thami Ngubeni, a multifaceted radio personality and actress, and the influential Tbo Touch, a media mogul and spiritual force in his own right, co-hosting the evening.

Musical Director, Manzini Zungu, shares the vision: “We are overjoyed to present these musical geniuses as part of our event—a night of thanksgiving, worship, and profound connection. It’s not just a show; it’s a testament to our musical journey’s evolution.”

Celebrating twelve years of breaking generational boundaries, the Soweto Central Chorus is on a mission to spread the word of God through song. Don’t miss this chance to witness their transformation and integration back into the music scene.

Tickets for this musical extravaganza are available at Webticket and Pick n’ Pay for R300 per person. Secure your seat at Webticket Link: https://t.co/6ihS6QUK8L . The Randlord Mansions: History

The history of these mansions is also a story of urban warfare and preservation. In the 1960s and 70s, as Johannesburg expanded, many of the original Parktown estates were ruthlessly demolished to make way for the M1 Highway and the massive concrete campus of the Wits University Medical School. The “Parktown War” saw heritage activists fighting the bulldozers to save what remained of the city’s architectural soul. Today, several of the surviving mansions serve as corporate headquarters, schools, or museums, stripped of their private domesticity but preserved as monuments to a gilded age.

Interestingly, these mansions also played a secret role in the city’s political evolution. It was in the drawing rooms of Parktown that the “progressive” mining elite would meet to discuss the future of the country, often finding themselves at odds with the more conservative Boer government. Lady Florence Phillips, in particular, used her influence to found the Johannesburg Art Gallery, insisting that a world-class city needed world-class culture, not just gold bars. Today, walking the “Heritage Trail” through Parktown offers a haunting contrast; you stand in the quiet, manicured gardens of the victors, looking down at the pulsing, crowded city that their gold mines created. It is the ultimate “view from the top,” a reminder that the extreme wealth of Sandton today has its DNA rooted in the stone-and-timber palaces of the 1900s.
