Telkom hands over brand-new Audi A1 from its ‘WIN A CAR COMPETITION’

Johannesburg, 1 March 2022: On Monday 28 February 2022, telecommunications provider Telkom, in partnership with leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices, Huawei, handed over an Audi A1 to a lucky winner Noxolo Msizi from Sebokeng township in Gauteng. Noxolo drove away with a brand-new Audi A1 valued at approximately at over R400 000 after being selected a winner from the “WIN A CAR COMPETITION.”

As part of Telkom’s “WIN A CAR COMPETITION” in partnership with Huawei Smart Phone, customers who purchased or upgraded to a Huawei mobile phones and/or Laptop range, from Telkom Direct or Telkom Express stores between 1 December 2021 to 31 January 2022 stood a chance to win a brand new 2021 Audi A1.

The winner was selected through an electronic random draw system from all eligible entries that met the competition’s terms and conditions requirements. Entrants could enter as many times as they liked but were only eligible to win at the end of the duration of the competition.

“We are constantly looking for exciting ways to reward our valued customers and show appreciation to them for their continued support and loyalty, and what better way to do it than to honour one of our customers with a brand new car?” says, Masingita Mazibuko, Executive: Brand & Consumer Marketing, Telkom Consumer Business.

The winner, Noxolo is a security guard and lives with her 14-year-old son and partner.

“I want to thank Telkom and Huawei for this amazing prize, I still can’t believe that I am the winner and owner of a brand-new Audi A1. I am not a believer in luck, but today is my lucky day. It’s the best day of my entire life. I feel honoured to be standing here in front of my brand-new Audi A1 with my partner and son. I still can’t believe that this is my car and I get to take it home with my family,” raved Noxolo excitedly.

“School drop-offs, family visits, and road trips are going to be my new favourite thing as I’ve never owned a car before, and I’m looking forward to reaching many destinations. Thank you so much, Telkom and Huawei, for making my dreams come true,” Noxolo added.

Have you tried: Travelling to South Africa?

Did you know this about Johannesburg? Sophiatown was originally part of the farm Waterval. In 1897 the speculator Hermann Tobiansky acquired a 237-acre portion of the farm, which was situated about four miles or so west of the centre of Johannesburg. In 1903 he had some of the land surveyed as leasehold township, divided into almost 1700 small stands. The township was named after Tobiansky’s wife, Sophia, and some of the streets were named after his children Toby, Gerty, Bertha and Victoria. Blacks started acquiring land in Sophiatown.

The Oriental Plaza: A Phoenix in Fordsburg

If Johannesburg is a city of forced displacements, the Oriental Plaza is its most resilient response. While the Rand Club was built for the elite and Ponte for the “jet-set,” the Oriental Plaza was born from the trauma of the Group Areas Act—a piece of Apartheid legislation designed to geographically separate the races. Yet, in true Johannesburg fashion, what was intended as a tool of containment and financial ruin for the Indian community transformed into one of the most vibrant, independent commercial powerhouses in the country.

The story of the Plaza begins with the destruction of Pageview, affectionately known as Fietas. In the mid-20th century, Fietas was a legendary multicultural hub, centered around the bustling 14th Street. It was the city’s premier destination for textiles, clothing, and spices, where shoppers of all races would rub shoulders in a “jazzy, soulful” atmosphere. However, because Fietas was located so close to the white-only city center, the Apartheid government declared it a “white area” in 1962. The community fought back for decades, but by the 1970s, the bulldozers arrived. Homes were leveled, and the thriving traders of 14th Street were forcibly relocated to a purpose-built, modernist complex a kilometer away in Fordsburg: the Oriental Plaza.

The government’s intent was cynical: by moving the traders into a controlled environment with high state-mandated rents and strict rules on what could be sold, they hoped to break the back of Indian commercial dominance. The early years were devastating; many businesses folded, and the “Grand Bazaar” felt like a sterile warehouse compared to the street-level energy of Fietas. However, the traders refused to vanish. They eventually won the right to purchase their own shops, making the Oriental Plaza unique among South African malls because it is owned by the shopkeepers themselves rather than a corporate landlord. This ownership model changed everything. Without the burden of massive monthly mall rentals, the 360+ independent stores can offer prices that national retailers cannot touch, turning the Plaza into a “bargain-hunter’s paradise” that draws millions of visitors a year.
