Urine Odours Feature in Gqeberha Carpet/Rug Cleaning Work Throughout the Year

18 October 2026 by Con Tributor

Gqeberha: A home can look well kept while its owner is still dealing with a smell in a rug or couch. True Clean’s review of a year’s cleaning work found that urine was mentioned throughout the calendar.

The review covers October 2025 to September 2026. About 9% of cleaning records explicitly mentioned urine, with references appearing in every month. That measures what was recorded in the descriptions; it does not establish the source of every odour or mean all the cases involved pets.

Owner Diederik Visser says dog odours are among the company’s frequent couch-cleaning requests. Visible dirt prompts some bookings, while other owners are mainly concerned about how the furniture smells.

“Dog smells are a big one,” he says.

The first useful distinction is what has happened to the item. A general dog smell and a known urine accident give the cleaner different information. How long the problem has been present, and what has already been used on it, are also part of the assessment.

Visser uses an enzyme based cleaner when treating these odours. That describes the company’s approach, with the item and its condition still affecting the treatment and the achievable result.

His workshop recordings show how much extra work a urine-affected rug can require. Describing one rug, he says: “We spent about two hours on this rug just rinsing it out.”

That is an account of a particular job, rather than a standard treatment time. It helps explain why a rug with an odour problem cannot always be treated as a routine wash. The work needed may become clearer when the material is assessed.

Long, shaggy pile is one example discussed in True Clean’s service information. It can hold a considerable amount of liquid and may need repeated flushing at the workshop. The practical demands of that work differ from an ordinary clean carried out in a lounge.

Fitted carpet raises a further question: what has reached the layers underneath? Repeated wetting can affect underfelt and the surface below it. A clean focused on the visible pile may leave the source of a persistent problem beyond its reach.

True Clean’s published carpet advice says those limits need to be discussed. Where the affected material cannot be adequately treated, the answer may involve further work or replacement. A promise made before assessing the layers would leave the owner with a false expectation.

Customers have often tried a home remedy before calling. Visser does not recommend relying on vinegar for urine problems. Knowing what was applied is useful to the cleaner, including whether the item was repeatedly wetted in an effort to remove the smell.

The drying arrangement needs attention after treatment too. For couches, he advises allowing about a day, with the fabric and weather affecting the actual time. Rugs follow the workshop process appropriate to their material and condition.

The conversation does not need to be uncomfortable. Saying which item is affected and what happened gives the operator information to work with. It also allows the treatment needs and possible limits to be discussed before the customer expects an ordinary clean to resolve everything.

Sophiatown: The Lost “Paris of the Transvaal”

Sophiatown’s golden age was the 1940s and 50s. It was a dense, vibrant, and often dangerous neighborhood, characterized by “backyard” rooms, shebeens (illegal speakeasies), and a sophisticated social scene. It was the birthplace of Kwaito’s ancestors and the legendary “Marabi” music—a blend of traditional African rhythms and American ragtime. The streets were home to the most iconic figures of African literature and music: Miriam Makeba found her voice here; Hugh Masekela received his first trumpet from a local priest; and the writers of Drum magazine, like Can Themba and Bloke Modisane, used the neighborhood as their muse. They dressed in Fedora hats and double-breasted suits, channeling the style of Hollywood gangsters and Harlem intellectuals, creating a world that was cosmopolitain, intellectual, and radically multi-racial.

However, the “Bohemia” of Sophiatown was an existential threat to the National Party’s vision of total racial separation. The government viewed it as a “black spot” in a white area. In 1955, the state launched Western Areas Removal Scheme. On the morning of February 9th, 2,000 heavily armed police officers moved in, forcing families into trucks at gunpoint. They were relocated to the newly established matchbox houses of the South Western Townships (Soweto), 20 kilometers away. The resistance was led by figures like Trevor Huddleston, the Anglican priest whose church, St. Joseph’s, still stands today. Despite the slogan “Ons dak nie, ons pola hier” (We are not moving, we are staying here), the bulldozers were relentless.
