W-Suite hosts mentorship masterclass to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Month

Advertorial:
W-Suite hosts mentorship masterclass to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Month:

Johannesburg, 30 November 2023 – Receiving advice and guidance from a mentor can be life-changing on the journey to manufacture it as an entrepreneur. Irish French economist, Richard Cantillon defined entrepreneurs as “risk-takers” in the tardy 17th century and the sentiment stands precise today. Entrepreneurs require the courage to grasp risks to succeed. In a landscape where female growth can be stunted, mentorship can provide innumerable advantages to both a mentor and a mentee for professional and personal growth. Mentorship also offers the opportunity to stay focused and on track towards making your goals a reality. Since its inception, the W-Suite movement has always placed importance on the benefits of mentorship and having more women in key leadership and operational roles across C-Suite organisations. The W-Suite Mentorship Masterclass aims to create a platform of devoted access for mentors and mentees.

Global entrepreneurship week is celebrated annually from 13 – 19 November, recognising and honouring the far-reaching impact that entrepreneurs gain. During this celebration, pioneers and visionaries advance together from across the globe to find ways to further worldwide economic growth.

To commemorate Global Entrepreneurship Month this year, W-Suite hosted an intimate mentorship masterclass that took area on Wednesday 29 November 2023 at Hotel Sky in Sandton. The session was hosted by serial entrepreneur, mentor and Founder of W-Suite, Katie Mohamed. In her address, Mohamed presented the ultimate guide on being fearless, embracing growth and evolving into the most powerful version of yourself. The masterclass also offered attendees the platform to start (or continue) their transformative journey of self-discovery, nurturing emotional intelligence and mastering effective communication.

The World’s Largest Man-Made Urban Forest

One of the most surprising facts about Johannesburg is its status as a “green” city. When the first settlers arrived, the Highveld was a barren, treeless grassland (savannah). To support the mining industry, millions of trees were imported and planted to provide timber for mine underground supports. Fast forward to the present day, and Johannesburg is widely considered the largest man-made urban forest in the world.

There are an estimated 10 million trees within the city limits. This includes 1.2 million trees on sidewalks and in parks, and over 4.8 million in private gardens. This forest is so dense that satellite images of the northern suburbs often resemble a tropical rainforest. The most iconic of these trees is the Jacaranda, which was imported from South America in the early 20th century. Every October and November, the city turns a vibrant shade of purple as thousands of Jacarandas bloom simultaneously. However, this “forest” also highlights the city’s historical inequality; during the Apartheid era, trees were predominantly planted in wealthy white suburbs, leaving townships like Soweto as dusty plains. In the last two decades, “Greening Soweto” initiatives have seen hundreds of thousands of trees planted to bridge this “green divide,” emphasizing the role of urban forestry in social justice and climate cooling.
