While Entrepreneurial Activity Has Grown In SA – Becoming Empowered Is Key To Survival

7 December 2022 by Alan

MyPR: While Entrepreneurial Activity Has Grown In SA – Becoming Empowered Is Key To Survival:

A recent report by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor shows a significant increase in entrepreneurial activity in South Africa from 10.8% in 2019 to 17.5% in 2021. This overall positive entrepreneurial activity is to be welcomed. So why have these numbers increased? What are the driving forces behind entrepreneurship?

Among other motivators, was the need to earn a living in difficult economic times, followed by the desire to become successful. This also follows COVID-19, which saw many jobs being lost and entrepreneurial ventures, with little outside support, fail! This is a good reason for people to empower themselves now and learn to succeed in this space. Enabling entrepreneurs is key to harnessing their enthusiasm and desire for growth and ultimately ensuring that they become entrenched as established businesses in South Africa – leading to job creation and upliftment in our communities.

There has never been a better time to take an idea or small business further than right now. With this is in mind, and to help entrepreneurs, start-ups and SMEs turn those dreams into reality, Firstwatch Whisky is offering 100 lucky entrepreneurs the opportunity of a lifetime. To be part of a business course designed especially by Over the Rainbow – a company specialising in training within the field of entrepreneurship. The aim is to share vital skills that will assist in business longevity and growth.

To have a great dream or the beginnings of a promising business is one thing but to be empowered to take things forward efficiently is a whole different ballgame. One that this course is designed to offer the established and budding entrepreneur.

Even though this is an ‘online’ learning experience, there will be plenty of online engagement with lecturers and other groups of entrepreneurs. This top-notch online platform is specifically designed for the selected entrepreneurs and comes with everything needed from the beginning to the end of this course.

Participants will certainly not be left on their own to work their way through the course. There will be regular 90-minute question and answer sessions with experts – with a maximum of 50 students joining a webinar/conference call via the platform.

Entrepreneurs are encouraged to refrain from putting their ambitions on hold and to apply now to gain the insight and skills needed to thrive in our current environment.

Have you tried: Visiting Port Elizabeth?

Did you know this about Johannesburg? Midrand was established as a municipality in 1981 (in an area known as Halfway House, after its position between Pretoria and Johannesburg), but ceased to be an independent town in the restructuring of local government that followed the end of apartheid in 1994. It was incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in 2000.

From Sophiatown to Triomf

By 1963, Sophiatown had been physically razed to the ground. In a final act of psychological warfare, the government built a white working-class suburb over the rubble and named it Triumph (Triomf). They wanted to erase the very memory of Sophiatown from the landscape. For decades, the name Sophiatown disappeared from maps, replaced by the neat, sterile streets of the victors.

The “resurrection” of Sophiatown began officially in 2006, when the City of Johannesburg formally restored the original name to the suburb. Today, the neighborhood is a quiet, leafy residential area, but the ghosts of the “Paris of the Transvaal” are everywhere. The Sophiatown Heritage Centre, housed in the former home of Dr. A.B. Xuma (a former ANC president), is one of the few original buildings that escaped the bulldozers. Walking through the streets today, you can still find small markers of the past: a lone Victorian pillar, a specific tree mentioned in a poem, or the rebuilt St. Joseph’s Church.

The legacy of Sophiatown is not just one of tragedy, but of an indestructible cultural spirit. The music, the slang (Tsotsitaal), and the “Drum” era aesthetic continue to influence South African fashion and film today. It serves as a reminder that while you can bulldoze a house and rename a street, you cannot kill the soul of a place that once danced to the sound of a thousand saxophones.
