Whip It:

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is proud to announce its official title partnership with King of the Whip 2025, one of Southern Africa’s leading action sports events. This year’s edition takes place on Saturday, 29 November 2025 at the iconic Montecasino precinct.

King of the Whip is South Africa’s premier Freestyle Motocross event, having grown from humble beginnings in a small sand quarry in Northriding, Johannesburg, into a world-class spectacle now held at Montecasino. Since its launch in 2017, the event has expanded in scale, professionalism, and international appeal introducing Best Trick contests in 2019 and attracting top local and global riders. By 2024, King of the Whip cemented its place as the second biggest Best Whip contest in the world, delivering an unmatched action sports experience in Southern Africa.

With attendance capped at a sold-out 7,000 guests, King of the Whip continues to set the benchmark in local motorsport entertainment. The Montecasino venue elevates the event’s premium positioning through enhanced production standards and a dynamic spectator experience.

“Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is proud to be the title sponsor of King of the Whip, an event that embodies the same strength, precision and fearless energy that defines our brand. Just as our vehicles are engineered to perform under pressure and go beyond the unexpected, so too do the bike riders who take flight in this thrilling competition. This partnership is more than just branding, it is a bold alignment with a platform that celebrates South African talent, grit and the spirit of pushing boundaries, values that sit at the heart of Volkswagen’s DNA,” said Princess Ndhlovu, Brand Head, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

“This partnership affirms Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ commitment to bold, forward-thinking collaborations that connect with communities and celebrate excellence in action sports,” Ndhlovu concluded.

The FNB Stadium: The “Calabash” of a Nation

While the original stadium was built in 1989, its current iconic form was the result of a massive reconstruction for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The design, led by the architectural firm Boogertman + Partners, is deeply rooted in African symbolism. Its exterior is modeled after a calabash, the traditional African gourd or “melting pot.” The facade is composed of thousands of fiber-cement panels in eight different earth-toned colors, mimicking the fire and earth used to kiln the traditional pot. At night, the stadium is illuminated from below, creating the visual effect of a glowing fire beneath the “pot,” a symbol of the warmth and hospitality of the African continent.

The stadium’s capacity is a staggering 94,736, making it the largest stadium in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. But its significance transcends its scale. The site is a “theatre of history.” In 1990, just days after his release from 27 years of imprisonment, Nelson Mandela delivered his first speech to a massive, roaring crowd at the original FNB Stadium. It was here that he effectively signaled the beginning of the end of Apartheid. Decades later, in 2013, the same stadium hosted his memorial service, bringing the world together in a final farewell to “Madiba.”
