Why Ekurhuleni Needs a Clean-out

28 August 2026 by Con Tributor

Statement by Kathuthetso Rasiligwane MPL – DA Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate:

This morning, I stood in front of the Ekurhuleni Council Chamber alongside hundreds of DA activists and public representatives. We protested against people like Julius Mkhwanazi.

Now, the news that yet another warrant of arrest has been issued for the very same suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Deputy Chief is simply outrageous.

This is the fifth time that Mkhwanazi has faced arrest, with the latest matter reportedly linked to the blue-light saga involving alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Despite the serious allegations that continue to pile up against him, Mkhwanazi remains a City of Ekurhuleni employee, and continues to receive his salary while suspended.

The people of Ekurhuleni are paying for this.

They are paying the salary of an official who has faced arrest after arrest, while residents struggle every day with failing services, broken infrastructure and a City that cannot get the basics right.

Enough is enough.

This is exactly the culture of corruption and impunity that the DA will bring to an end when we take office in November.

Officials entrusted with public money and public safety must be held to the highest standard.

Those who abuse their positions, enable corruption, or use the City for the benefit of politically connected individuals have no place in the administration we intend to build.

This morning I stood with residents outside the Council Chambers and made a simple commitment: Under a DA government, corruption will have consequences.

We will clean up this City, restore accountability and make sure that the people employed by Ekurhuleni are there to serve residents.

Not themselves nor their connections.

The people of Ekurhuleni deserve nothing less.

Constitution Hill: From Injustice to Justice

Constitution Hill is a living museum located on the ridge between Braamfontein and Hillbrow. It is a site of extreme contrasts, housing both the notorious Old Fort prison complex—where some of the most horrific human rights abuses of the 19th and 20th centuries occurred—and the modern South African Constitutional Court, the highest guardian of the country’s democracy. This site is often referred to as the “Robben Island of Johannesburg” because it incarcerated nearly every major figure in the liberation struggle, including Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. However, its history is far older than the anti-Apartheid struggle; it was originally built in 1893 as a prison by the Boer Republic and later converted into a military fort to defend the city against the British during the South African War.
