2026/2027 Swimming Season Opening Delayed

2 September 2026 by Con Tributor

The City of Johannesburg wishes to inform all residents that the official opening of public swimming pools, originally scheduled for 1 September 2026, has been postponed to 1 October 2026.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Councillor Thapelo Amad says, “The City sincerely apologises for this delay and any inconvenience it may cause to regular pool users and communities. This extension is necessary to ensure that all municipal swimming facilities meet the strict health, safety, and operational standards required to provide a safe environment for the public”.

The City has adopted a phased reopening approach with 36 pools in October 2026, recognising that the condition and operational requirements of facilities vary across regions.

MMC Amad says, “The City recognises the important role municipal swimming pools play in providing affordable recreation, promoting active and healthy lifestyles, and creating safe recreational spaces for children, young people and communities during the warmer months”.

In view of the delayed start to the season, the city is also considering extending the 2026/27 swimming season into April 2027, weather permitting and subject to operational considerations. This would provide residents with additional access to municipal swimming facilities and partially offset the shortened season.

“The city is actively working to resolve outstanding compliance and maintenance tasks over the next month. We thank our residents for their patience and understanding as we work to ensure our recreational spaces are safe for everyone this summer”, concludes MMC Amad.

The Carlton Centre Scale

The scale of the Carlton Centre is difficult to grasp from the street level. It is a massive “superblock” that covers an entire city block, and surprisingly, nearly half of its total floor area is underground. Beneath the street lies a sprawling three-level subterranean shopping mall that once housed over 180 shops and an ice-skating rink (the “Sky Rink”) on the 20th floor that was a legendary social hub for generations of Joburgers. The building’s foundations are equally gargantuan, with concrete piles extending 30 meters down to the bedrock to support the millions of tons of steel and glass above.
