Three ATM bombings Suspects Arrested With Explosives

2 September 2026 by Con Tributor

PARKTOWN – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, together with private security partners and other law-enforcement stakeholders, arrested three suspects and recovered explosives during an intelligence-driven operation in Matholesville, Roodepoort, on Tuesday, 01 September 2026.

A multidisciplinary team comprising members of SAPS Crime Intelligence, the Ivory Park Task Team, Gauteng Traffic SLEU, private security companies and the West Rand Explosives Unit operationalised information about a suspected supplier of explosives allegedly supplying individuals involved in ATM bombings, cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies and illegal mining activities.

The team proceeded to a premises in Matholesville, Roodepoort, where two men and a woman were found. A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of 88 safety fuses, 62 blasting cartridges and approximately 400 metres of detonating cord, with an estimated street value of R160 000.

The suspects, all Zimbabwean nationals, were arrested for possession of explosives and are expected to appear before court soon.

A white Toyota Etios displaying false registration plates was also seized for further investigation.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Gauteng, Major General Fred Kekana commended the multidisciplinary team for the successful intelligence-led operation.

“ATM bombings and CIT robberies remain a serious threat in Gauteng. This operation demonstrates the importance of collaboration between SAPS, private security and other stakeholders in disrupting organised criminal activities,” said Major General Kekana.

Investigations are continuing to establish possible links between the suspects and other ATM bombing, CIT robbery and illegal mining incidents.

The Rand Club: Jameson Raid

The Rand Club’s history is as exclusionary as it is grand. For most of its existence, it was a bastion of white, male, British-aligned power. It was famously the “nerve center” for the Jameson Raid in 1895—a botched coup attempt against Paul Kruger’s South African Republic that served as a precursor to the devastating Second Boer War. For nearly 100 years, women were not allowed to be members, and black South Africans were permitted only as staff. The club’s refusal to modernize its membership policies led to a slow decline in the late 20th century as the “new” Johannesburg moved to Sandton. By the early 2010s, the club was facing bankruptcy, its grand halls gathering dust and its membership dwindling to a few hundred traditionalists.
