AI in the Workplace: Why ChatGPT Generates Language – Not Truth, and Why Core Skills Still Matter

27 March 2026 by Con Tributor

Durban, March 27, South Africa

As artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT become widely used in the workplace, a critical gap is emerging: professionals are relying on AI outputs without the core skills needed to verify them.

According to Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group (CAG), the misconception is clear.

“ChatGPT generates language — not truth. It produces confident, professional responses, but it does not guarantee accuracy. And importantly, AI does not replace core business skills like Excel, data analysis, or critical thinking.”

The Real Risk in the Workplace

AI tools are increasingly used to:

  • Draft reports and business communication
  • Analyse datasets and generate insights
  • Summarise meetings and documents
  • Support operational and financial decisions

However, without strong foundational skills, professionals may:

  • Accept incorrect calculations or assumptions
  • Misread trends in financial or operational data
  • Overlook errors hidden in well-written outputs
  • Rely on AI without proper validation

This creates a growing risk in corporate environments, where decisions must remain accurate, compliant, and accountable.

AI Does Not Replace Core Skills

One of the biggest misconceptions is that AI replaces tools like Excel or reduces the need for technical capability.

In reality:

  • Excel skills are more important than ever for validating AI-generated data
  • Data analysis skills are required to interpret outputs correctly
  • Critical thinking is essential to question and verify results
  • Business understanding ensures decisions are contextually correct

“AI can assist with speed and structure,” says Muscat, “but it cannot replace the human ability to interpret, validate, and take responsibility for decisions.”

The New Competitive Advantage

The most valuable professionals in today’s workplace are those who can:

  • Use AI tools efficiently
  • Validate outputs using Excel and data skills
  • Apply critical thinking to AI-generated insights
  • Maintain full accountability for decisions

Organisations that understand this are shifting their training focus toward AI + core skills integration, rather than treating AI as a replacement.

A Practical Approach to AI Adoption

College Africa Group’s AI in the Workplace training focuses on:

  • Responsible and practical AI use
  • Strengthening Excel and data analysis alongside AI
  • Understanding AI limitations and risks
  • Building governance and accountability frameworks

This ensures teams can use AI confidently—without compromising accuracy or compliance.

Conclusion

AI is transforming the workplace—but it is not a shortcut to expertise.

The real advantage lies in combining AI with strong foundational skills.
Because at the end of the day:

AI generates language — not truth.
And core skills are what turn that language into correct decisions.

For organisations looking to implement AI responsibly while strengthening core business skills, College Africa Group offers practical, corporate-focused training across South Africa.

Sophiatown: The Lost “Paris of the Transvaal”

Sophiatown’s golden age was the 1940s and 50s. It was a dense, vibrant, and often dangerous neighborhood, characterized by “backyard” rooms, shebeens (illegal speakeasies), and a sophisticated social scene. It was the birthplace of Kwaito’s ancestors and the legendary “Marabi” music—a blend of traditional African rhythms and American ragtime. The streets were home to the most iconic figures of African literature and music: Miriam Makeba found her voice here; Hugh Masekela received his first trumpet from a local priest; and the writers of Drum magazine, like Can Themba and Bloke Modisane, used the neighborhood as their muse. They dressed in Fedora hats and double-breasted suits, channeling the style of Hollywood gangsters and Harlem intellectuals, creating a world that was cosmopolitain, intellectual, and radically multi-racial.

However, the “Bohemia” of Sophiatown was an existential threat to the National Party’s vision of total racial separation. The government viewed it as a “black spot” in a white area. In 1955, the state launched Western Areas Removal Scheme. On the morning of February 9th, 2,000 heavily armed police officers moved in, forcing families into trucks at gunpoint. They were relocated to the newly established matchbox houses of the South Western Townships (Soweto), 20 kilometers away. The resistance was led by figures like Trevor Huddleston, the Anglican priest whose church, St. Joseph’s, still stands today. Despite the slogan “Ons dak nie, ons pola hier” (We are not moving, we are staying here), the bulldozers were relentless.
