The City of Johannesburg is going to aggressively recover a whopping R1.4 billion which is owed by governments and entities in a massive disconnection of services drive starting today, 27 March 2026.
The City is taking advantage of the 31 March 2026 Financial year-end for National Provincial as well as state owned entities to enforce payment of outstanding municipal debt.
“As the financial year-end looms, the City is aware that some departments may be set to return unspent funds back into the fiscus, but this should only be a consideration after settlement of municipal debt owed to the City,” said Group Head for Revenue Shared Services Centre, Lufuno Mashau.
The disconnections follow continued efforts by the City to resolve the government debt issue through established intergovernmental channels, but the reality has seen the debt growing in recent times.
The City will have its doors remaining open for intergovernmental coordination but the situation cannot be allowed to impact negatively on service delivery to residents any longer.
“Government departments, like any other customer in the City, must prioritise settlement of their municipal accounts. They must pay their bills in full and on time. Failure to meet their obligations leaves the City with no option but to disconnect services,” added Mashau.
