21 June was Selfie Day and to mark this fun occasion, millions of social media users across the globe – both famous and ordinary folk – perfected their selfie game. This year’s #WorldSelfieDay was a little bit different from others and featured plenty of dishevelled, dry-shampoo-clad hairdos and makeup-free faces.

Said to have origins as far back as 1839, the first-ever ‘selfie’ was taken by American chemist Robert Cornelius in the back of his family’s chandelier shop. Since his first intentional self-portrait, humans have been fascinated by their own image.

Thanks to mobile phones with built-in cameras, it became a lot easier as time went on to snap pretty pictures of our faces. And with improved camera technology, popular photography apps like Instagram and even selfie-inspired songs, the playful pastime skyrocketed and hasn’t slowed down since.

But with everyone and their grandma taking selfies these days, it can be tricky to stand out in a sea of blended faces. With upgraded Dual Screen and all-day battery life, the newly launched LG V60 ThinQ 5G is your secret weapon for next-level selfies.

Introduced in May 2020 to the South African market, LG’s latest V series innovation was, along with the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, the first 5G-enabled smartphones to hit the continent. Designed for maximum productivity and entertainment, the third-generation Dual Screen device enables consumers to experience more through enhanced photo, video and audio capabilities and updated software.

Boasting the brand’s most advanced camera features and technologies, the V60 ThinQ 5G is equipped with two rear cameras, including an impressive 64MP lens and time of flight (ToF) sensor for sharper, brighter selfies even in bad lighting conditions. You no longer have to awkwardly stretch your arm by a window in a certain sunlit room to capture a flattering photo of yourself. Plus, the device features a 13MP wide-angle lens for those goofy group shots.

Two screens are better than one, especially when it comes to taking sneaky selfies. LG’s new Dual Screen doubles the available screen real estate so you can work and play at the same time. Snap that gorgeous face of yours while reading emails, typing messages, playing games or watching videos. And with a ribbed back for a more secure grip and super-sharp 20.5:9 ratio FHD+ P-OLED displays, you’re sure to get the perfect selfie every time.

You don’t need an official day, a reason or approval from others to document looking and feeling your best. Every day should be a celebration of life, and if snapping selfies boosts your mood and confidence, we encourage you to do that as often as your heart desires.

Did you know this about Johannesburg? City Deep is the world’s largest dry port: Johannesburg the world’s largest city that isn’t located near a coastline or navigable river. City Deep was developed 1977 by South African Railways to accommodate 50% of the city’s cargo (which comes from ports in Cape Town and Durban).

The Rand Club: Jameson Raid

The Rand Club’s history is as exclusionary as it is grand. For most of its existence, it was a bastion of white, male, British-aligned power. It was famously the “nerve center” for the Jameson Raid in 1895—a botched coup attempt against Paul Kruger’s South African Republic that served as a precursor to the devastating Second Boer War. For nearly 100 years, women were not allowed to be members, and black South Africans were permitted only as staff. The club’s refusal to modernize its membership policies led to a slow decline in the late 20th century as the “new” Johannesburg moved to Sandton. By the early 2010s, the club was facing bankruptcy, its grand halls gathering dust and its membership dwindling to a few hundred traditionalists.
