Johannesburg Flying Squad Successes

GAUTENG – On Friday, 11 September 2026 to Monday,14 September 2026, JHB Flying Squad members arrested three (03) suspects and recovered three (03) robbed or stolen vehicles.

On Friday, 11 September 2026 at around 15:30, JHB Flying Squad members were following up on information of a suspect dealing in drugs. Members proceeded to an address at the corner of Sunbird Place in Alexandra and on arrival found one (01) occupant and recovered nine (09) mandrax tablets with the street value of seven hundred Rand (R700-00) and three hundred Rand (R300-00) cash. The suspect was placed under arrest for possession of drugs and detained at Alexandra SAPS for further investigation.

On Monday, 14 September 2026 at around 14:45, JHB Flying Squad members were busy patrolling around Mayfair. Members stopped and searched two (02) males and recovered drugs from both suspects. The first suspect was found with fifteen (15) ziplocks of crystal meth with the street value of one thousand and nine hundred Rand (R1900-00) and the second suspect was found with eight (08) ziplocks of crystal meth with the street value of one thousand and three hundred Rand (R1300-00). Both suspects were placed under arrest for possession of drugs and contravening the immigration Act 13 of 2002 and were detained at Langlaagte SAPS for further investigation.

In other policing matter, on Saturday,12 September 2026 at around 09:00, members were patrolling around Alexandra at the corner of Joe Nhlanhla Street and 2nd Avenue. Members recovered a Silver Toyota Land Cruiser that was abandoned. The vehicle was stolen in Douglasdale and was booked at the pound for safekeeping and further investigation.

On Sunday, 13 September 2026 at around 17:40, members were busy patrolling around Moffatview at the corner of Electron and Energy Street, recovered a Grey Toyota Hilux that was stolen in Bedfordview. The vehicle was found abandoned and was booked at the pound for safekeeping and further investigation.

In further policing, on 14 September 2026 at around 13:20, members were patrolling around N1 South after Malibongwe Drive and recovered a White Toyota Hilux bakkie that was stolen, the vehicle was found abandoned after it was involved in an accident. The vehicle was booked at the pound for safekeeping and further investigation.

The suspects are aged between 30 and 35 and will be appearing at the nearest Magistrate’s courts soon. Anyone with more information regarding the matters can contact the relevant station or Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.

The Wilds: A Sanctuary of Stone and Steel

The Wilds was officially opened to the public in 1938, carved out of the rocky “koppies” (hills) of the Witwatersrand. Unlike the manicured lawns of the city’s more traditional parks, The Wilds was designed to showcase South Africa’s botanical heritage. It is a vertical garden of sorts, featuring steep stone paths that wind through forests of yellowwood trees, proteas, and ancient cycads. At its highest point, the reserve offers one of the most spectacular views of the Johannesburg skyline, where the brutalist towers of Hillbrow seem to rise directly out of the prehistoric-looking vegetation.

However, like many of Johannesburg’s public spaces, The Wilds fell into a period of deep neglect during the late 1990s and early 2000s. As crime rates rose and the city’s maintenance budgets shifted, the reserve became overgrown and was perceived as a “no-go zone.” The waterfalls stopped running, the stone paths crumbled, and the once-vibrant greenhouse became a skeletal ruin. For nearly two decades, this incredible piece of real estate sat largely abandoned, used only by a few brave locals and the occasional film crew looking for a “wilderness” setting within city limits.
